LES WALDROOP AND HIS CAROLINIANS
"Centennial Boogie" b/w "Shenandoah / Lil LIza Jane"
Centennial 1525
NO RESERVE
This record was released in 1955 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the founding of Franklin, North Carolina. Not Franklin County but Franklin, a small town in Macon County, North Carolina surrounded by mountains about an hour past Asheville on U.S. 64, on the way to places like Clay and Cherokee Counties, basically in the middle of nowhere.
About the record, not much is known. It appears nowhere online. Waldroop did have a number of releases over the years, one as recently as 1974 (Big Watergate Bugs), one on Flop in 1961 and an earlier release with the Carolinians on Country Jubilee from 1959. The a-side of that 45 was 'They Said it Couldn't Be Done' and was credited to Les Waldrop (one 'o'). That label was located in Demorest, Georgia, in the far northeastern corner of the state and not that far from Franklin, NC. Call him hick rockabilly or country bop but he's somewhere in between. On this bopper/primitive rockabilly song, he's accompanied by bass and guitar. Probably by two guys named Wade and Mickey who accompanied Waldroop (sometimes spelled Waldrop) on the Flop single.
Centennial Boogie bridges the gap between country bop and rockabilly; from 1955 it pre-dates classic rockabilly but Waldroop has a strong voice and rocks it. The music is spare, just a bass and electric guitar backing Waldroop's vocals; there are two instrumental breaks - both are fairly short but the second one foreshadows the heyday of classic rockabilly with it's hollow out electric guitar sound. There is no time of the song listed on the label but I'd estimate 2:15. On the b-side side, not that it matters to rockabilly fans, but the medley, especially a sweet version of Shenandoah, stands out too.
I've e-mailed a couple of rockabilly and country bopper collectors/dealers both in the states and overseas and only one was the least bit familiar with this record. He wrote back that probably only 100 or so copies were pressed (though that was just an educated guess he admitted) but he knows of only a few copies in the hands of rockabilly collectors. Here's your chance to pick up an extreme rarity.

United States customers
We use the eBay calculated shipping system. Please click on the tab for details. We ship within 5 business days. For shipments within the U.S., delivery confirmations with tracking information is included. We use professional record mailers and one or more fillers. Shipping discounts are available on multiple purchases shipped in the same mailer - this applies to both U.S. and International shipments. When calculating postage, double albums count as two; box sets will probably cost more to ship than double albums.
International customers
All records are shipped via Airmail.
URGENT NOTICE TO INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS - NEW SHIPPING RATES
As of January 27, 2013, the US Post Office has substantially increased postage costs for international packages. Please do not pay when receiving the eBay invoice. My invoice will be less because I print postage at home - but the increase is still substantial. Actual postage to ship 1 45 is $11.48 and, since I use the calculated method - which add the cost of my supplies - the total shipping cost for one 45 will be $12.98. The good news is that the cost will not increase when I ship 2 or 3 45's in the same package and additional 45's will only increase the shipping cost a relatively small amount. So if you are an overseas buyer, you will save a lot if you buy more than one 45 at a time.
The increased costs also apply to LP's but the percentage increase is much less. Also, shipping costs for U.S. buyers have only increased slightly.
Again, please wait for my invoice or request an invoice from me when you are finished with your bids or purchases. It will be less than the invoice that eBay automatically sends you.
I appreciate your understanding. Please do not leave me a low buyer satisfaction rating for shipping costs as that would hurt my standing on eBay. I actually lose money on shipping because both eBay and paypal take out fees for the amount you pay for postage. Thank you, Becky.
Discount is available on multiple purchases shipped in the same carton. Please tell us what country you live in and the number of LP's you want. Final cost is based on the weight of the package.
A NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING..
Ebay has recently enacted new terms which are designed to encourage sellers to offer free domestic shipping on their listings. I'm sure they have their reasons for doing this. Since nothing is truly "free", especially the cost of shipping, ebay is recommending it's sellers roll the shipping cost into the price of the product. I've never been a huge fan of this tactic so I won't be doing it. I also have a solid amount of overseas customers who would not be receiving this "free" shipping and therefor would be getting the short end of it if I raised my prices to compensate for the possibility that a domestic client might buy the item. Why do I mention this? As more sellers conform to ebay's urgings those of us that do not will start to look like we are overcharging for shipping. Even a modest shipping charge, when compared to "free", will seem exorbitant. This will likely start to affect our Detailed Seller Ratings for shipping and handling charges. Low DSR scores can have a serious impact on sellers. Ebay offers discounts for the best DSR ratings and a few low scores can litterally cost a considerable sum of money in discounts lost. So if you are buying from me please consider, I do not make money on my shipping costs, there is no handling fee. I try and keep the shipping fees as close to the cost of actual postage plus the cost of packing materials - LP mailers cost nearly $1 apiece - and often end up losing a few cents in the transaction. My reputation, feedback and DSR scores are very important to me and my business.
