Rarity: Very Scarce: another Spiral album selling in minimal numbers. Although this copy’s cover is a little down, the record itself looks and plays superbly. An elusive album that rarely surfaces these days.

Brief Info: The first of two albums made on the Vertigo Spiral label, and their second overall album, the debut was on Bell Records. Fronted by Mickey Jupp, this album is a fine selection of country rock, rock ’n’ roll and alternative rock. Like the debut, this was called ‘Legend’, but is best-known as ‘Red Boot’ for obvious reasons. ‘Moonshine’ followed fairly quickly on the same label, but made even less impact than this. The band folded and Jupp went back to pub style rock, but re-emerged by signing to Stiff records at the height of the punk and new wave era of the mid- to latter part of the 1970s. Clearly Legend were a talented band, but sales and success eluded them, all three of their albums are rare and not seen often. This copy has a lovely record that plays beautifully, the cover is down with a little wear and a little aged, but still more than respectable, even if not for the more discerning. Still with this album at a real premium these days with more Vertigo collectors striving to fill those missing gaps, this is one that will please many I feel sure, the record itself will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howard’s Printers and includes the Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The front is really quite nice with only a little rubbing near the very sides here-and-there. A reasonably light stain near the bottom left corner area and adjacent sides in places, this has fairly modestly visibility. A quite light hint of waving and with a few small marks and mild grubbiness, so looking lightly aged. However, there is hardly any creasing and no sticker issues with the graphic retaining deep colour. So as stated, very respectable and looking still quite attractive overall.

Cover Back: All similar again with a tip crease on the bottom left corner tip. The edge rubbing is slightly heavier with a gentle hint of rubbing around the rim shape. More under light, some tiny press marks are seen as well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A couple or three, mostly very small surface pulls which are all too common on these gatefold covers were the closed sides often stick for whatever reason. Also a small tear on the right edge has been quite neatly repaired. A few light marks, hints of dulling here-and-there, but overall, still quite attractive as seen.

Top Edges: Light (front) to moderate patchy rubbing, both straight, unsplit and flush.

Bottom Edges: Largely as per the top in reverse, just a slightly more wear overall on these storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that has little wear. The inside back opening edge is neat and crisp, the very slightly wide back has thickened in places as seen viewed end-on. No trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: The spine is actually quite impressive: solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Some mainly light patchy rubbing on the hinge folds, but the main blue surface retains most of it’s ink, the really good news is all text is perfect and unworn. That so often not the case even on the lesser-worn unprotected Swirl covers.

Corners: Moderate to moderate+ corner rubbing, with a crease on the back bottom left. Around fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A rare cover that does show its age somewhat, that said it is still a respectable example as I hope my pictures show. Not for connoisseur cover enthusiasts or more the more discerning Vertigo collectors, but this could be a better value-for-money example for those who need it. Certainly very decent and still quite attractive with no serious flaws, simply moderate edge rubbing and lighter visual imperfections that time and storage will inflict on many covers that are not as carefully stored as others.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Swirl inner sleeve is impressive (as is the record), aged little, still clean and fresh looking. Two neat undamaged window circles and the polylining clear and barely crinkled. Hardly any creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one date-coded 1070 (October 1970).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all evidence with no penetrating stylus scratches and really impressive clean sound. Only when viewed more critically under bright angled light are very fine and faint surface marks seen, totally superficial and mostly wispy blemishes finer than hairlines. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors, but not those wanting as new (and good luck with that).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Vertigo record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and with reasonable care. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this sadly overlooked and almost ignored album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. The cover may have wear, but the record looks nice and plays great, that is always the most important for me.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
