LEFTOVERS “CIGARETTES & ALCOHOL” RARE Brisbane KBD PUNK
EMI Custom PRS-2624 (INSANELY RARE OZ PUNK 45)
The Leftovers – Cigarettes and Alcohol 3-track 7” (orig. Australia STEREO EMI Custom/Punji Stick PRS-2624—1979, stamped sleeve with “THE FU**EN LEFTOVERS HATE YOU”)
Release date: June 1979.
On offer here is an ULTRA RARE original issue of the THE LEFTOVERS “Cigarettes and Alcohol“ 3-track 7” single, released on EMI Custom. There were ONLY 500 COPIES pressed back in the day, but most of these are long gone. This particular issue has the legendary stamped sleeve with “THE FU**EN LEFTOVERS HATE YOU“.
This is what Clinton Walker had to say about the band in Ian McFarlane’s “The Australian New Music Record Guide, Volume 1: 1976-1980”:
The (F**ken) Leftovers were probably Brisbane and Australia’s first punks in the Sex Pistols’ mould – obnoxious, anarchic, anti-social, powerful, violent and with a strong self-destructive bent. They’d been around since 1977 and suffered all the setbacks befitting a band of their nature, but they were persistent enough to plough on and even recorded eventually. They also refused to take themselves too seriously, which probably explains why they didn’t release more material and try to conquer Sydney.
As it was, their Cigarettes and Alcohol single is brilliant, gut-twisting punk mayhem, and easily rates along with The Victims, The Saints, Birdman and News’ first records. There were only 500 copies of this mega-rare single pressed, and according to legend, the picture sleeves made for it were left behind in a taxi! In his article on Aussie punk singles in From The Vault (Vol. 1 Issue #4) Bruce Milne states that there are believed to be about a dozen copies in picture sleeve, but these would be nigh impossible to locate these days. Some of the singles had “The F**ken Leftovers Hate You” stamped on the plain white bag. No Complaints was reissued on At The Solicitor’s Request. These days, all the members of the Leftovers are either dead or serving time in one of the country’s penal institutions!!

VG++ ORIGINAL STAMPED SLEEVE with “THE F**KEN LEFTOVERS HATE YOU”: great appearance overall despite some handling wear (creasing & spotting), completely free of any splits or tears which is practically unheard of (see digital pics for a closer look).
Record:
VG++ visual: would rate a M- if not for paper scuffs across each side (VG++, two on side 1 & one on side 2); audible: CRISP and VIBRANT SOUND OVERALL, despite some light underlying surface noise when played at HIGH VOLUME, it is quite obvious that this 45 has HARDLY BEEN PLAYED; labels: INSIGNIFICANT SPINDLE WEAR.
DESPITE SOME MINOR VISUAL FLAWS, THIS PUNK 45 HAS HARDLY SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY SINCE IT WAS RELEASED OVER 30 YEARS AGO. HIGHLY ACCEPTABLE COPY – BID WITH CONFIDENCE!
