Selma Amelia Anderson (mother) From her beginning as a vocalist on local radio to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she forged a sophisticated persona, evolving into a multi-faceted artist and performer. She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums—encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, and art songs.

Early life

Peggy Lee was born as Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota, the seventh of eight children of her expecting parents, Marvin Olof Egstrom, a station agent for the Midland Continental Railroad, and his wife Selma Amelia (Anderson) Egstrom, on Wednesday, May 26, 1920. She and her family were Lutherans. Her father was Swedish-American and her mother was Norwegian-American. Her mother died when Peggy was just a four year old toddler. Afterwards, her father married her step-mother Min Schaumber, who treated her with great cruelty while her alcoholic but loving father did little to stop it. Later, she developed her musical talent and took several part-time jobs so that she could be away from home to escape the abuse of her step-mother.

Lee first sang professionally over KOVC radio in Valley City, North Dakota. She later had her own series on a radio show sponsored by a local restaurant that paid her a salary in food. Both during and after her high school years, Lee sang for small sums on local radio stations. Radio personality Ken Kennedy, of WDAY in Fargo, North Dakota (the most widely heard station in North Dakota), changed her name from Norma to Peggy Lee. Miss Lee left home and traveled to Los Angeles at the age of 17.

She returned to North Dakota for a tonsillectomy, and was noticed by hotel owner Frank Bering while working at the Doll House in Palm Springs, California. It was here that she developed her trademark sultry purr – having decided to compete with the noisy crowd with subtlety rather than volume. Beringin offered her a gig at The Buttery Room, a nightclub in the Ambassador Hotel East in Chicago. There, she was noticed by bandleader Benny Goodman. According to Lee, "Benny's then-fiancée, Lady Alice Duckworth, came into The Buttery, and she was very impressed. So the next evening she brought Benny in, because they were looking for a replacement for Helen Forrest. And although I didn't know, I was it. He was looking at me strangely, I thought, but it was just his preoccupied way of looking. I thought that he didn't like me at first, but it just was that he was preoccupied with what he was hearing." She joined his band in 1941 and stayed for two years.

Packaging :

I take great care during packaging and do each one personally. I use hand cut cardboard, which I get from a trucking company. (It's so thick that you will save it and use it again.) Each piece is 1/4 inch thick and together they are very stronge. I always remove the record from the picture sleeve and add clear plastic and record sleeve. All packages are marked in red and white "Handle With Care Fragile" sticker on one side.

Postage :

You have to pay for the postage.   This record will weigh 6 ounces when ready to ship. US winners can figure out your own postage costs for US First Class with tracking. I will send it through USPS and you will get an email with the tracking number. Overseas winners will get it sent by First Class Mail International. (Buyers from Brazil, France will assume all risks for shipping to your country.) I will send your record as soon as you pay. (same day if before 2 PM and next day if after 2 PM, Monday thru Saturday) I will combine postage if you win more than one record. Please wait for my invoice for all of your winnings in one package

Shipping & Payment International Buyers: We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.

We normally ship via US Post Office 'First Class International'. Customers in Europe and Asia usually receive the record within 1-2 weeks. On occassion, packages have been significantly delayed in UK customs. If you do not receive your package within 4-weeks, please contact us. If you desire expedited delivery or tracking to delivery, we are glad to quote alternative shipping options.

Special services such as: Insurance, Priority or Registered Mail will require additional fees. Must ask for these services

M- (Mint Minus) Disc appears to be virtually flawless, and should play as such...

EXCELLENT  (EX) May have fine paper scuff other than look flawless 

VG++ Denotes tiny VISUAL flaw or paper scuff(s) that is cosmetic, or minor markings that cannot be heard

G "Good" Disc has lots of wear, and serious visual abrasions. It should play through without skipping (unless otherwise noted). Condition is generally rough, but is good enough to serve as a "filler" copy until something better comes along. Only the rarest of records will be listed in this condition.

All other defects, such as cut-out holes (CO), stickers and/or writing on the label (SOL / WOL) and warping (wrp) are noted as listed here.

PAYMENTS:

U.S.: Paypal is preferred. Personal checks will have to clear before I ship the item(s). You may also contact me before the end of the auction about other options.

Outside of the U.S.: Paypal is much preferred, but you may contact me before the end of the auction to discuss other options.

SHIPPING:

If you win multiple items, please wait for or request an invoice with combined shipping.

In the U.S., packages may be sent via Media, First Class, or Priority mail. If you desire any other options, such as Insurance, Registered, Expedited shipping, etc., tell me upon receipt of your winning bid notice, and I will total up the cost (with these additional fees).

If you live anywhere outside of the U.S.: Packages are normally sent via first class airmail.
