Rarity: Moderate: in terms of numbers made and sold. As most collectors will know this album was issued with six different inner covers with varying sleeve designs (the brown bag is not really the sleeve as such). A bar scene shot from different angles and poses is featured and each has its own coded letter from A to F printed on the left spine edge near the corner. This one on offer is ‘F’ as seen on my close-up picture – this I have always found the hardest to find, and this is a beauty. The brown bag outer sleeve is still in it’s original shrinkwrap, the first I have ever seen as such, this certainly is rare sight. And popular records by the biggest names in rock, are seldom seen hardly played – and this sounds fantastic. The ‘Magic Colour’ inner sleeve does have colour on one side, that far from unusual, and finding these totally uncoloured is becoming immensely difficult. So a very nice all-round example, and inner ‘F’ never easy.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The band’s final album proper, although an archive collection Coda was issued later. A fine and solid set, but not quite in the class of the earlier works (for me anyway) – the stunning excellence of the first four albums could hardly ever be maintained forever and the band probably knew when to call a halt. Still some memorable moments of course and the powerhouse heavy blues sound is still evident and strong. So arguably, a little patchy, but still a very fitting swansong for this amazing 10 year recording career of this legendary UK rock band.

The Outer Brown Bag: EXCELLENT(+): a little difficult to put a definitive grade on this as it is still inside the orignal shrinkwrap. And as this always contracts over time, it has caused some crinkle. The very top part is exposed to access the contents, the sawtooth opening has a little mild burring and gentle creasing, but how many won’t have being honest? The crinkle on just one side is the main factor and clearly, the surfaces are as clean as when made and no edge splits or tears. My grading is probably being too conservative really, finding one of these still inside the shrink will never prove easy, and I think this can be justifiably be deemed rare.

The Inner ‘Real’ Cover: MINT(-): and little short of as made being ultra clean, fresh with no ring marks or rubbing, just the odd fine edge surface crease. The spine edge with it’s perfect ‘F’ letter code is pristine Mint with no compression or rubbing whatsoever. This has a fine ‘box-like’ feel to it and all is unflattened with still solid edges that remain crisp and sharp. The unique ‘F’ artwork for this cover is superb and will prove near impossible to find better. The side opening nigh-on perfect as well with any thickening or burring minuscule.

The ‘Magic Colour’ Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: designed by Hipgnosis and printed in England as well. In terms of real wear, barely none, but one side has coloured-up in places as seen on my picture. The other side has none, so my grading is for this only – and again I feel harsh. Clean, fresh with no creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

‘Cover’ Summary: Taken as a package, this set is in very fine condition and all looks very attractive. With the more elusive ‘F’ code and unsplit covers, this should appeal to even the serious Led Zeppelin collectors – another vital piece of the 6-set ‘jigsaw’. The full set of 6 has a very high catalogue value these days and ‘F’ I have always found more difficult to find than the others. Of course, the brown bag inside the shrink is a nice touch, and, the natural crinkle apart, will also prove hard to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that has without doubt, hardly been played. A very clean, shiny, jet black and solidly pressed record with any surface traces few, very fine and faint, as seen critically under angled light. As I always remind, hard card inners never friendly to fragile record surfaces and it is nigh-on certain, they were unceremoniously inserted into them in manufacture. Any faint and minor surface blemishes superficial and non-sounding and this disc plays with fantastic sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Swansong plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Powerful distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, another great production from Page. Any surface sounds minimal and faint and few copies will play much better than this with no pops or significant clicks noted. Both channels are clean and sharp, I know for certain this record has hardly been played and has been very well stored and looked after within in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this very fine album. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A full set of six of this album has a very high catalogue value which probably confirms the quest for them all is not that easy to achieve.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
