Label/Format: Atlantic – Red and Maroon (‘Plum’) format with the rarer original Jimmy Page and Peter Grant credits as seen on my label scans.

Label Condition: Both in STUNNING, bordering on supreme conditions. Seldom will these first format original plum labels be seen better. As clean, fresh and unworn as you will ever see, any spindle traces seen critically under light, are very few, fine and faint. Let’s get this into perspective: this was and still is a very popular album. Most seen are the second format labels without the credits seen as per these. Then the vast majority will be seen well used and often abused with grubbiness, handling marks and many spindle marks. This pair look practically as made with simply incredibly good looks as I hope my scans show. A pair of ‘plums’ for the connoisseur collector.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. A very good weight for this album.

Country of Manufacture: England for both LP and Cover (some Plum copies included a German made sleeve, but this one is E. J. Day).

Rarity: Rarer as an original, most seen are second pressed ‘Plums’ or later Kinney’s. Even harder to find with a hardly played record.

Brief Info: A masterful third release - and sometimes, a little underrated - it’s always overshadowed by I, II and IV. A more varied album with more use of acoustic instruments than previously. A wonderful set with it’s beautiful moving wheel packaging that was designed by ‘Zacron’ (Visual Creations). A graphic artist of the London scene of the 1960s. His logo is seen on the inside bottom right corner area. Again peaking at No. 1 in the UK and US, this band could do little wrong at this time. This is a first pressing with the unique Page-Grant producing credits as seen on my scane. A quite heavyweight record that sounds fantastic with all the power, punch and detail you would expect from such an early copy that without doubt, has hardly been played. With a very clean, little-marked record, two supreme labels, cleaner and less blemishes cover than most and even including the date-coded September inner sleeve, this wonderful set sets the bar very high and will take a great deal of beating.

Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Moderately high. The moving wheel and windows often get damaged and the top and bottom edges often fall apart from use. Even though this cover is fully laminated, it often yellows badly particularly around the edges and is only scarcely found with none. Regularly seen also with manufacture creases on the laminate where adhesion clearly was an issue, probably due to the circular cut-out windows on the front. This one has avoided that too.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably undergraded as such. A gatefold with the moving wheel with die cut windows on front, laminated front, back and inside. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Lamination and Front: Even though this cover is fully laminated, if often ages badly. All 11 circle windows are pristine with no burring or damage. The wheel rotates easily and freely too with no force needed. The laminate itself is clean with only very light surface marks seen under light and barely any traces of dulling. Still a very fine shade of white with barely any edge toning or ageing. All the laminate is fully adhered with no manufacture creasing – that significant and never to be taken for granted. Any usage creasing tiny, few and very faint indeed. The wheel rim is neat and unburred and no thumb creases here which is something that often occurs. Please see this detail on my close-up picture. Overall, a very attractive front that sets a very high standard with barely any of the issues so often seen.

Cover Lamination and Back: The first thing more than worthy of mention on this back, is the lack of manufacture crinkle and creasing to laminate that so often has adhesion issues. This one is fully adhered with NO crinkle as all and that makes quite a difference for better looks. A little quite faint edge darkening that so few of these ever seen to avoid. Under light, a few light surface marks are seen along with a few fine surface creases. Finding one of these will no issues at all will prove near impossible and as far as they go, this is is way above average and sets a high standard.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Little to fault inside with minimal traces of any toning to those susceptible edges. I reitterate this has the E. J. Day printing credits not the commonly seen German version that has the artwork transposed. This goes very close to reminind of as made with that wheel rim again superb, as seen again on second close-up picture.

Top Edges: Very neat indeed with minimal traces of any thickening or burring to those end panels, few avoid it. Seldom seen these much better.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above but minor thickening (being critical). These, the traditional storage edges, few will ever avoid this as a bare minimum. Still solidly sealed with the wheel neatly sandwiched between the card.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are very neat and crisp with barely any noteworthy wear or thickening. The wheel recess equally crisp and ultra neat and attractive. The record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect: very solid and dead straight with no wear and still very black. Text is perfect and unworn under very solid and uncracked laminate. Minimal trace of any central crease formation and all the laminate is present and unpeeled. They rarely get seen better.

Corners: The spine pair are practically pristine with supreme shape retained. The right pairs are also neat with any tip rubs tiny and light. These retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: Overall, a very attractive all-round example of this famous UK-made sleeve. Some consider amongst the finest album covers ever made and this one does it high justice. With such little wear and no serious lamiante issues like many, this is sure to please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the Polydor-style lined inner has mildly aged with some light discolouration and glue darkening on the seams that all remain unsplit. Barely any creasing with two very neat circle windows and very clear lining. This one is date coded with the ultimate first date issue of 0970 (September 1970), this album issued in October of the same year (this detail seen in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and seldom seen a much better as a first issue. With so many of the early Plum copies played into submission, often badly marked or scratched, with terrible sound resulting, this is a very impressive, and without doubt, little played copy. Clean with a very fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed, any surface marks are very few and light as seen critically under light. With the huge popularity of this record, such an early example with so few visual blemishes will be hard to find better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: An album that has a fair number of quieter passages compared to some Led Zeppelin albums, but this plays superbly with barely anything unwanted and finding the Plum copies much better will never prove too easy. Just a small few very light ticks were heard on ‘Tangerine’ from a near microscopic mark that I could not even see or locate with the naked eye. I had to actually follow the label on rotation and then use a magnifier to see the minuscule culprit – I suspected a tiny piece debris, but a tinest mark was seen with the glass. I noted no pops or other clicks and this is a very clean pressing with minimal surface sounds at all. The sound quality is superb: very clean and detailed and not even a hint of any distortion or groove wear. Both channels are clear and the sound is quite magnificent. The furious acoustic guitars on ‘Gallows Pole’ (and others) are dynamic and could have almost been in the room and Plants vocals are astonishing. The details and sheer volume and power embedded into a first-issue plum copy of III is without equal. This is a copy you can play and enjoy with no clipping or high frequency stresses, although it has very faint surface traces under light, it has avoided any serious traumas or mistreatments. With high gradings on all parts of this record, this sets the bar very high and most fans will treasure it.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
