Label/Format: Atlantic – Red and Maroon (‘Plum’) format. This is the much rarer original format that denotes a ‘first pressing’ with the Jimmy Page and Peter Grant credits near the top. Also the 2401002 Catalogue Number with no break (Please see these details on my label scans).

Label Condition: Very Good examples, mainly clean looking, but this copy has been played a number of times and clearly handled a fair degree. Spindle marks are fine but moderate in number with minor grubbiness around the hole area.

Cat Number: 2401002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good weight for this album.

Country of Manufacture: England for both LP and Cover (some Plum copies included a German made sleeve, but this one is E.J. Day).

Rarity: The title itself is moderate. But first pressings with the label details as seen above are much rarer. The Peter Grant credit was soon removed and the catalogue number then included a hyphen. The Jimmy Page credit remained but was then moved down the label nearer the 6 o’clock position. These original labels are far more elusive and far less seen. Hence, I have no hesitation in offering this near Very Good copy. Please be aware, this record is below my usual high-grading standard but still offers fine sound. Not perfect by any means: the record has numerous light surface marks and some fine light scratches and a few do emit a few light clicks and some surface sound. But a high percentage plays superbly right up the top levels, so NOT a copy for the more discerning collector, but it could be just right for the collector who wants this much rarer original without digging in too deep into the bank balance. The cover has aged a little, but overall, looks nice. If anyone has any doubts if this copy is good enough for them – do NOT bid. This is not Excellent or Near Mint like most everything else I offer, it is down because it has been played a number of times and IS marked and there IS surface sound in places with some light sporadic clicks. It’s scarcity is the reason this is being offered.

Brief Info: A masterful third release - and sometimes, a little underrated - it’s always overshadowed by I, II and IV. A more varied album with more use of acoustic instruments than previously. A wonderful set with its beautiful moving wheel packaging that was designed by ‘Zacron’ (Visual Creations). A graphic artist of the London scene of the 1960s. His logo is seen on the inside bottom right corner area. Again peaking at No. 1 in the UK and US, this band could do little wrong at this time. With this label format, it is recognised as a first issue, they are far harder to find than the second label design. It includes (of course) the wheel cover, and a UK made one too, this in high respectable condition. The record has numberous, mainly light marks with some light surface sound in places and a few sporadic, mainly light clicks. Not to my usual very high standard, but I found this more than easy to listen too and mostly it pleased me. So make your choice, not a copy for the audiophile collector this time.

Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Moderately high. The moving wheel and windows often get damaged and the top and bottom edges often fall apart from use. Even though this cover is fully laminated, it often yellows badly particularly around the edges and is only scarcely found with none. Regularly seen also with manufacture creases on the laminate where adhesion clearly was an issue, probably due to the circular cut-out windows on the front.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(-): a gatefold with the moving wheel with die cut windows on front, laminated front, back and inside. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Lamination and Front: Even though this cover is fully laminated, if often ages badly. All 11 circle windows are pristine with no burring or damage. The wheel rotats easily and freely too in both directions. The laminate itself is only slightly dulled but retains a decent sheen. Some age toning near the very edges that many seem to get. Still a fine shade of white with just a few light surface marks, mainly seen under light and a few, mainly light creases that have very modest visibility also. All the laminate is fully adhered with no manufacture creasing. The wheel rim is neat and unburred and rotates freely. Overall, a highly respectable front that sets a fine standard.

Cover Lamination and Back: The back is largely the same in most respects including the toning around edges and mild dulling. Two surface ‘creases’ in manufacture where the laminate has not quite adhered which is a very common trait on this cover – many have considerable more than just two. The centre has light ‘wheel pin’ impression that most show and here it hardly even shows. Some fine, light surface marks and hairline edge creases, but overall again, a highly respectable back that has reasonably modesly aged.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Other than the usual toning around the very edges, this has little else to fault. I reitterate this has the EJ Day printing credits not the commonly seen German version that has the artwork transposed.

Top Edges: Quite neat overall with minimal thickening and burr traces, few avoid it. They are however, darkened.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above with just a little thickening to the central area of the front. Bottom have not come unstuck, just the central area is open as I believe most are.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is still very sharp, the back again slightly thickened on the inside central area with a trace of mild feathering, only seen with end-on viewing. Again these are darkened and guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect: very solid and dead straight with no wear and still very black. Text is perfect and unworn under very solid and uncracked laminate. There is no central crease formation and all the laminate is present and unpeeled.

Corners: The spine pair are superb with barely any traces of wear with near perfect shape retained. The right ones have rubbed a little witih a little mild burring, these retain fine to very fine shape overall.

Cover Summary: Overall, a very respectable early-made cover, this has withstood being handled and stored well. A few light marks, creases and age toning, but now over 40-years-old, maybe it’s earned the right to have them. Some consider amongst the finest album covers ever made and this one does it pretty fine justice. It will please some collectors, but not the more discerning cover connoisseur.

The Inner Sleeve: GOOD(+): the Polydor-style lined inner has aged and has clearly been handled and used, but at least it is original and clearly one of the earliest made for this record. It has moderately heavy corner creases and a few nick or slightly bigger window splits. The lining intact and still clear however. The edges are still intact with no repairs, this due to the lining’s protection it feel. The important date code is 0970. Yes, I could have swapped this inner for a better one, but NO, I only want to keep the right one with the album it came with – warts ’n all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR VERY GOOD: I rarely have to grade records with many surface marks and only the fact this record is a fair degree rarer than the second label variant allows me to do so. That said, although this has numberous surface marks, some scuffs and a few light scratches that do emit a few light clicks, this record, overall still overs very fine sound. Still reasonably clean with a decent sheen (not shine as such), intense black and quite heavily pressed, it is a copy for the right collector – not the more discerning, but a more than respectable example. Any doubts…

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Graded near Very Good visually and some plays to that grading, mostly near the beginning of each side, but this record gets better and better a little further in and most actually plays well above this modest visual grading. ‘Very Good’ to me is exactly by definition what it is and should be. Not a totally trashed, unlistenable wreck of a record with horrendous deep penetrating scratches that emit multitudes of loud clicks, pops even bangs and crunches. It this record offered that, believe me, I would NOT offer it – rare or not – it would be put in the recycling bag. This still offers pleasing sound with NO distortion and any clicks gentle and modest in number. Most masked by the intense music that retains full clarity and detail. Remember, I am playing a well-played, popular 40-year-old classic on one of the world’s most revealing turntables, it takes no prisoners in revealing ever blemish a vinyl record has to offer. So it will depend somewhat on what this record will be played on in the future. Even via the LP12, this still sounded fine – some surface sound, a few light clicks here and there, but the music more than wins overall. Much plays perfectly, probably the vast majority infact. So think and decide if this is the copy you want. All I will say is, if this was a near mint copy on this first issue format, it would be very likely to soar in price, so this could be just the right copy at the right price for the right collector. Any doubts… do not bid – this is a VG record – NOT better.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
