DESCRIPTION: Very rare and out of print.

      Young considers The Well Tuned Piano—a permuting composition of themes and improvisations for just-intuned solo piano—to be his masterpiece. Performances have exceeded six hours in length, and so far have been documented twice. One of the defining works of American musical minimalism, it is strongly influenced by mathematical composition as well as Hindustani classical music practice.

"The Well-Tuned Piano is the product of a lifelong enthusiasm for both Eastern mystical traditions and investigations of acoustics, natural harmonics and human pitch perception undertaken by 20th-century science. ... His resonantly retuned piano hummed and roared and seemed to sing; listeners of an earlier time would undoubtedly have believed they were hearing the Music of the Spheres made manifest."

CONDITION:
VINYL (play- & visually graded): NEAR MINT MINUS; disc 5 has odd surface marks, which are not audible. This is the only disc downgraded to VG++. All five discs have a slight warp.  Shockingly quiet pressings. Not perfect, but considering the many very quiet passages throughout, superb.
COVER: Front section of box has rubbing on front, wear on the edges, some wear on surfaces, 2 corner seam splits, one of which was once repaired with black tape.
Back section of box has some rubbing, a tear near/at bottom, no splits.
Booklet: Front has some light fingerprints, rubbing. No writing or marks, very light general wear.
