Kenny Dorham “’Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia” Blue Note BLP 1524.
This is the original Van Gelder-stamped (“RVG” by hand), deep-groove mono pressing of Kenny Dorham’s “’Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia” on the 767 Lexington Ave NYC labels of Blue Note BLP 1524. “Ear” or P present in deadwax.
Get a taste of that original Blue Note first pressing magic. No reissue will ever sound as good.
This disc ranges from very quiet to noisy, with ticks on some tracks. But as with all powerfully-recorded Blue Note Lexington Avenue pressings, it does not deter from the enjoyment of the music. The LP has decent gloss, no warps. The jacket is in excellent condition, with good gloss, and one barely wrinkled/bent (LL) corner. Another corner (RL) is worn, and the lower left seam is slightly cracking (see photos). Rest of spine seam and top seam has minor wear and blemishes. Back cover clean. Personnel includes Kenny Dorham, J. R. Monterose, Bobby Timmons, Kenny Burrell, Sam Jones, Arthur Edgehill.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers.
