KINGBEES – MY LITTLE RED BOOK / I’M A KINGBEE

One and only single from the Irish Beat Group the Kingbees, on the now defunct Tempo label.

There have been a number of Bands with similar (or the same) names, but as far as I can see this was the first.

The label on this 1966 single bears no serial number, however the run-off area reads 7XEP 511-1 and 7XEP 512-1 and both sides also have the KT tax code.

My Little Red Book is a Bacharach-David song, produced by Tommy Ellis and is very much in the beat tradition of the day.

I’m a Kingbee has no writing credit (presumably the Band themselves?).  It was recorded on the Sound Stage at the Ardmore Studios in Bray and produced by John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin. Clearly, it was heavily influenced by the early blues style of the Rolling Stones.

 As regards the quality of the Vinyl, I would have to say that it plays and looks somewhere between VG and EX. The run-in of both sides has crackle, but this is soon swamped by the music, and the run-out is pretty good. No damage, distortion, jumps or skips and only one or two audible cracks during the music. The labels are in original condition, clean and with very little spindle marking. All-in-all, for forty-one years old, it’s absolutely superb and very evocative of the period.

GRADING OF VINYL RECORDS

It will inevitably be subjective, but I've tried to grade by the Record Collector standard. All records undergo an initial visual grading under strong light. Any marks in the vinyl which may be significant result in partial or complete playing. Because I haven’t heard them for some time, certain records are played anyway. Comments on individual listening are appended to the grading.

EXCELLENT (EX) The record itself shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG) The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G) The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

I don’t have records outside these three categories and I don’t believe in Mint! To bridge the gulf between VG and EX, I use VG+; VG/EX and EX-

PACKAGING

Records will be wrapped in Clingfilm, with a double corrugated card outer.
