First issued in 1983 on the Star label, Majestic Dub captures King Tubby at a time when dub had already reshaped reggae's possibilities yet still sounded startlingly inventive. Working from his Kingston studio, Tubby strips rhythms to their bones and rebuilds them with cavernous echo, spring reverb and razor-sharp dropouts. Tracks such as 'Dub Them Under Manners' and 'Bad Boys Dub Stylee' glide on heavyweight grooves supplied by a formidable cast including Sly & Robbie, Jackie Mittoo and Earl 'Chinna' Smith. The result is as powerful as you would expect from such a towering figure - every drum hit and organ phrase is given room to breathe and helps ensure this overdue vinyl reissue is unmissable.
