The Performances

Chicago, February 25 1929.  The gig took place in Chicago, presumably to suit Oliver’s itinerary. According to the Victor files Oliver directs, but does not play. Considerable doubt about band personnel. The trumpeter is unknown, but turns in a fine Oliver impression in his second (muted) solo. Omer Simeon is recognizable. Both sides are good, with the distinctive sound of  “third period Oliver” (i.e. the Victors). Best side is Can I Tell You?,  essentially a pop song with a simple, effective melody composed by Oliver, which has a good arrangement and much quality soloing all round.

Rarity

Not the commonest of the Oliver Victors, nor the rarest.

Condition

Good E. Nice clean copy.

Condition grading  I use the internationally recognised system, as laid out below. My grading is scrupulous. I guarantee down to V+. Grades thereafter being somewhat open to debate.

• (E+) plays like new with few signs of aging, no noticeable scratches or other marks. Glossy surface, not dull
• (E) still very shiny, with no visible signs of groove wear (such as greying) but with possibly a few very minor scuffs and very light (inaudible) scratches
• (E-) still shiny but without the lustre of a new record. Possible light wear (but no audible distortion), light scratches and scuffs
• (V+) Surface is not shiny, and there may be greying of the grooves caused by needle wear, as well as scratches and scuffs, but playing is generally free of distortion. Some of the scratches may be deep enough to be audible but they will not allow the stylus to skip or jump
• (V) Record is worn and has scratches, possible "digs", and greying of the grooves. Generally, the record will distort on playing and the scratches and other damage will be audible
