Description
For sale is an amazing, quite possibly unique undocumented R&B / Doo Wop / precursor-Soul acetate entitled "Forgive." It appears to be a working title, as it looks like it was previously called "Forgive Me Please," but "Me Please" has been crossed out. This comes from the estate of Maurice Shapiro, whose name is on the acetate. He was a minor composer and producer who produced and or wrote a few interesting sides aside from this one, most notably Doris Payne bangers "You Better Mind" and Foolish Decision." He also wrote and produced Brooklyn legend Bert Keyes' single Do-Do Do Bah-ah" (listing an original storage box of this 45 this week). I don't know who is singing on this, but he has an incredible voice, combining the smoothness of Nat King Cole (could it be by him?), with more muscular R&B and some incredibly soulful and powerful falsetto runs, particularly after the sax solo. Superb backing vocals as well. I'm sure there's someone out there who can identify these guys, who are good enough that I suspect they recorded more than this track. A nice Huey Piano Smith-style intro leads to interesting session work throughout. Pretty sure this never saw the light of day, as 1) Shazam and other identifying software can't place it and B) no label would release a song with a sax solo that is so out of tune! Acetate rates VG-. Has its share of marks, scuffs, etc., which affect play. On the other hand, likely unique, and the last of its kind... in need of nurturing from extinction and in good enough condition to clean up and remaster.
ADDENDUM: I just found another acetate of this song in the same collection, but with a different, slower arrangement and female singers! Sounds a bit later, early soul/girl group, circa 1960-62. I will list that one after this auction ends.

The other version of this song I have is by none other than soul singer Doris Troy. Her version, which I will list today, is also undocumented, and likely dates to some years later... 1961-1964 in all likelihood.
