U.K. 1971 ORIGINAL VERTIGO "Swirl"LABEL (Cat.No. 6360-024)

THE KEITH TIPPETT GROUP"Dedicated to you , but you weren't listening"-to give this album it's full title-is this modern jazz combo's only release on the celebrated prog-rock label.Vertigo recorded quite a few in this vein(most notably Ian Carr's NUCLEUS).

The vinyl looks and plays as "EX-plus".It's a beautiful,heavy, U.K.  pressing by Vertigo owner Philips. No marks whatsoever.Clean labels on both sides.One side has the usual label-listings, black print on white.The other (Side A)just has the unadorned Vertigo swirl-a-la Brigit Riley.Housed in it's original swirl innersleeve it looks even better.

The cover is the usual lavish, deluxe  gatefold production beloved of the label at this time.Designed by none-other than everyone's favourite sleeve-painter,Roger Dean. I would have to describe it as "EX-minus".It's intact.The mainly black background shows up some minor flaws:a number of tiny creases run off the top and front edge.The unusually strong,wide spine is mainly  unaffected.Just the one very small crease which is disguised by the cover pic.There are one or two other marks on the front which look to have been in some way cleaned-up by a previous owner with a marker-pen, but these are tiny and hardly visable.The reverse suffers from very light ring-wear on the top.There is also a very small tear at the top opening approx.a centimetre long.Nevertheless, this does not spoil the over-all great shape the cover is in.The B&W gatefold-inner which has some sleevenotes and another Dean display is in generally great condition.Very little wear and no tear in there.

It's the back that lists the tracks-all originals by members of the band-and the line-up , which is eleven men strong!It's actually a big band.Including a couple of Soft Machiners and some of the leading-lights of the U.K. jazz scene of the time.Only four-the main soloists-get their pictures added:pianist KEITH TIPPETT himself;saxophonist ELTON DEAN; cornetist MARC CHARIG;and trombonist NICK EVANS.The programme is modern,even avant-garde,jazz on this electric fusion of weird and wonderful sounds.Not easy listening by any stretch of the imagination, but then that's the idea.
