Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light/light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. No wear to the full spiral from rim to hole on side one. And side two incredibly white and devoid of fingermarks or toning. This is a high-quality swirl record.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. A very good solid weight for any record.

Rarity: Rare: one of the rarest and most elusive Spirals. The jazz titles simply failed to sell and this is an amazing recording. Only the second copy I have ever had, the other around seven years ago. The cover is very nice indeed with only a little edge rubbing and the record stunning. It offers blistering sound quality which is nigh-on perfect for all. Finding this record especially better will prove immensely difficult and for sound, it is almost unbeatable.

Musicians: A stunning array or musicians are included on this breathtaking recording including several members of ‘Lizard’ era King Crimson, there are: Keith Tippett - piano, Hohner electric piano; Elton Dean - alto saxophone, saxello; Marc Charig - cornet; Nick Evans - trombone; Robert Wyatt - drums; Bryan Spring - drums; Phil Howard - drums; Tony Uta - conga drums, cow bell; Roy Babbington - bass, bass guitar; Neville Whitehead - bass; Gary Boyle - guitar.

Brief Info: Within the Vertigo Spiral catalogue, few are as inspired as this one. This bunch of high quality musicians play incredible, almost freee-form jazz-rock on what is a demanding and challenging record. The intensity and sheer volume of the recording will blow away inferior systems and has to be heard on worthy equipment to be fully appreciated. Tippett, who appeared on King Crimson’s early album ‘In the Wake of Poseidon’, is an avant garde pianist, on this album, with songs composed by several band members, nothing is held back. Free-flowing and free-blowing jazz, this is not for the faint-hearted. A complex recording of rasping reeds, only a top quality copy of this record will really do or it will be unlistenable and I am delighted to state this one is a beauty and plays fully focused and VERY LOUD. Play this with a well warmed up amp to it’s upper levels and it will blast the varnish from your speakers, this full-on, open throttle free jazz that will make the head and senses spin – BRILLIANT!!, this was what progressive jazz-rock is all about. This combo were not about to compromise and Vertigo inventiveness would not have wanted to intervene. Obviously a commercial non-starter, even by Vertigo standards, this took this genre to high levels to new extremes making the likes of Ian Carr’s Nucleus on the same label almost sound mundane (which they were certainly not). Only a handful of label collectors or the curious at the time would have shelled-out for this one hence it’s genuine rarity now. Finding one with a very fine cover and inner is equally challenging, and both here are very nice. For those with aspirations of putting a Spiral set together, this one will not appear often and a wonderful opportunity. A copy that can be played loud and enjoyed, one for the avant-jazz connoisseur, this man and his band were fast and ferocious, this is a Spiral classic and is must be heard again soon. For audiophile listeners – this listing is DEDICATED TO YOU!

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. A difficult and wear-prone cover, being so dark, it is unforgiving and revealing. Printed and made in England by Howards. The artwork was designed and drawn by Roger and Martyn Dean. Includes the spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: An impressive front which superb Roger Dean artwork, this has little wear. Any rub traces are light and faint with most of any on the spine ends which are only quite small anyway. The lack of creasing is a major plus and any fine surface marks or blemishes only really seen under light, again very few again. No sticker marks or residue traces, again such covers are so susceptible. The artwork itself is very clean and still fresh looking and this challenging front will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is quite similar with any rim impression or rubbing very little and light. Clearly this is massively prone to ring wear and few will be found without any – any trace here is probably as light as it ever gets. Hardly any creases again and minimal edge or even corner wear encroaches. Both front and back in context can be considered almost exceptional given all the facts.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again lovely Dean graphics (one seen in close-up), with hardly any wear inside here at all. Just a little light traces of handling on the matt black surfaces, and few (unless unhandled, hardly likely really) will escape that. A lovely centre spread.

Top Edges: Only light (or less) patchy rubbing, both straight.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing, predominately black storage edges seldom escape wear. I prefer this than tipping-in which I feel sure than has not had.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear to either. Any thickening or burring very little and mild indeed as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on the back edge, both untrimmed. The back edge indeed not quite flush-cut in manufacture, only by a fraction however.

Spine and Text: Solid, very straight with no compression. Folded square so the edges meet up nigh-on flush and parallel. The ends have rubbed with one small chip about quarter way down. Delighted to say all the text is fully present and unworn and there is minimal wear to the spine’s surface. Almost against the odds, both folds show hardly any rubbing and nice to see spine edge especially so intact and still quite attractive as many spiral cover spines are seen threadbare.

Corners: All the corners have moderate rubbing with generally fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Dark and difficult, these unprotected Swirl gatefolds especially are so prone to all forms of wear and damage. So in context, this I consider to have faired well. Not connoisseur standard, but with so few of these around or surfacing, sometimes a little compromise has to be made. Still a very strong looking example, it should please many collectors.

The Spiral Inner: EXCELLENT: little real wear and only gently aged with only a little discolouration. Some corner creasing which is seldom avoided. The lining intact and very clear as seen through two very neat, crisp window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on quite thick Vertigo vinyl. A little dusty when purchased, but when cleaned on my VPI professional cleaning machine, the surfaces look fantastic. Any surface traces are almost minuscule, this viewed with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and the sound quality matches the impressive looks. This is the best Spiral original I have seen for some time, and even this grading hardly does it full justice. Visually a gorgeous, and one of the rarer Swirl albums, it should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This genuinely rare Vertigo record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound – vital on such a record, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing (and I mean that wholeheartly) with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, high intensity sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a very difficult album. Very loudly recorded – who would hear anything unwanted anyway? – with high intensity blowing free jazz, this will test out the tracking ability of even the better turntables. All those rasping reeds, keyboards and rhythm are fully focused and sharp with no clipping or distortion, vital but far from guaranteed, this plays supremely well. Clearly never exposed to any heavy-tracking old record player, can you imagine what a thick heavy mono stylus would do to this complex information? Few copies will match, let alone outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure (was this actually ever repressed?). Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly and with utmost care. Although the cover has a little wear, the record has none and the sonic delivery of this intense music is quite breathtaking – all you need is a system that can handle it. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This disc will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
