Yes, another graal (and I who believed that there was one and only!) or an afro-ufo... It is probably a recording made some centuries ago, or millenniums ago… unless it was brought to us from the future by our friend the professor (Doc from.."Back to the future" !) . Difficult to say. And the creator’s origins…who knows ? But it does not seem that they are human beings… inhabitants of another planet, gods? We are getting closer to the truth ...
Some light years later...
Mopti. A harbour at the edge of the Niger river .Timeless.The Kanaga Orchestra. Hallucinating music. Timeless.
And a sacred object which resisted to time despite a long journey...

The decade of the 1970s was a golden era for the big bands of West Africa. State-funding in Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and to a lesser extent, Senegal, had created a vast network of modern orchestras across the region. In Guinea alone there were more than 50 regional and national orchestras. In Mali, the regional orchestras performed for both state and private functions, and when performing under their private guise the orchestras used their commercial name. For example, the Regional Orchestra of Mopti also performed in their private guise as Kanaga de Mopti. In 1977 the Malian government released a series of LPs on the Mali Kunkan label highlighting some of the great Malian orchestras of the period. Kanaga de Mopti's release is pictured above.
The opening track, Gambari, encapsulates the essence of the Malian orchestra style. The guitar solo, which evokes the best of Sékou "Diamond Fingers" Diabaté, assumes a central role, and explores the melody across several octaves. The solo is well-supported by electric organ, and the brass section is used sparingly to punctuate and reiterate the melody. All the sections of the orchestra combine in the last stanza of the song, thus unifying and reinforcing the theme. Gambari is unquestionably one of the great songs recorded by Mali's orchestras, yet, incredibly, it is available only on this LP. Side B opens with Kanaga, and a funk-laden organ solo which segues into one of the most compelling brass section riffs one is ever likely to come across. This song really swings and towers above its contemporaries. The track is followed by N'do N'do, another classic, featuring a weaving organ and staccato brass section. The backing vocalists propel the number with their call-and-response Fela-like chorus, and are led by the vocals of Sory Bamba, who is in career-best form throughout the LP.
This record is quite simply one of West Africa's masterpieces. Why it has never been re-released is a tragedy, and one that underscores the need for a retrospective of Mali's regional orchestras. Other LPs on the Mali Kunkan label featured National Badema, Kéné Star de Mopti, Mystère Jazz de Tombouctou, L'Orchestre Sidi Yassa de Kayes, and L'Orchestre Bida de la Capitale, with only the National Badema LP released on CD. There are many other classic Malian orchestra recordings from the 1970s (for example, Regard sur le passé à travers le présent - 1973, Panorama du Mali - 1973, and the Rail Band's RCAM series of five LPs recorded in Nigeria in 1975) resting in the vaults, gathering dust, and waiting to be brought back to life.…
L'Orchestre Kanaga de Mopti continues to perform today.

GRADING For LP / NOTATION pour les disques :
NM (NEAR MINT) : Near perfect copy, played only a few times. At worst it may have one or two insignificant flaws. The highest grade I give for a non-seled record .../ Disque et pochette impéccables, joué seulement quelques fois.
EX (EXCELLENT) : Clean copy, there may be a few very light light surface traces/hairlines, plays with a few tiny crackles, cover has minor defaults.
VG++ (VERY GOOD++) : A few light surface traces/scuffs, plays with very light crackles. There may be a few traces or marks on the cover, corners or slices slightly worn...Nothing serious but is not graded EX because of few minor defaults / Très bon état dans l'ensemble, avec de légères traces et rayures en surface, très légers craquements audibles.
VG+ (VERY GOOD +) : Played a lot, will show signs of handling, has surface marks and scuffs, plays with light crackles or light surface noise background, no serious scuffs, no serious crackles. Cover slighty worn (traces, light ring wear, dog eraed, corner and slices slightly worn...)
VG (VERY GOOD) : Used record, played a lot, has a lot of surface traces, marks and scuffs, crackles and a few clicks while playing, sometimes constants but not too serious, no serious clicks or jumps. Still enjoyable.
VG- (VERY GOOD MINUS) : Played a lot and more (but still playable), a lot of scuffs, marks, and traces, a lot of crackles while playing, sometimes serious, may have a few serious scuffs with serious clicks (or a few little jumps). The cover is in a bad state, damaged.../ Disque très utilisé (mais peut l'être encore...), beaucoup de griffes, de traces et de marques, peut avoir de sérieuses rayures , avec de sérieux craquements, avec la possibilité de sauter légèrement. La pochette est en mauvais état, endommagée...
G (GOOD) : Indeed, not so good...but still alive ! Played while his entire life (and once again today !), or really ill-traited...A lot of serious traces, marks and scuffs, serious crackles and surface noises while playing, serious clicks, may have jumps...And the cover is really in a very bad state too, even no entire...Must be very rare to be proposed in this state.../ En effet, pas si bon...mais encore vivant !
POOR : ? = dead ? hard or impossible to listen to it...should be listed only in a batch. Cover ? better to say no more cover !
Each record and cover will be described in more detail if necessary / Chaque disque et pochette seront plus détaillés si nécessaire.
