Journeys - Matt Sullivan

("Sun Cover: North of Tangier" Cover Art Variation)

Excellent Plus (EX+) LP Record / Very Good (VG) Cover

1975 Private Press

M.V. Sullivan Publishing MVS-1001

Excellent Plus (EX+) Vinyl / Very Good (VG) Cover. Excellent playback and sound. Sparkling vinyl with minor surface sleeve rubs and very minor paper sleeve scuffs. Labels show some light spindle marks. This LP holds a very strong Excellent Plus visual vinyl grade and equal or better playback grade displaying low noise with only a few light isolated pop-clicks throughout playback. Cover shows some light ring or shelf wear with lightly worn corners and lower edge - some foxing or humidity stains on rear cover art. Original inner sleeve has yellowed. A nice album.

This album was released with two distinctive and different covers with the same catalog numbers (as also credited on rear cover) - one of a female on the telephone called "Girl Cover: Memories" and this example called "Sun Cover: North of Tangier". Both releases are very rare and seldom surface or become available for sale.

  • Notes (taken off the web elsewhere): ...."Hmmm. Not sure what this is. I’ve looked all over the web and came up with zilch. Anyway, what I do know is it’s a very cool and rare private/DIY folk-rock LP with acoustic folk-psych auras. Echoey, pensive and moody, with a beautiful mellow vibe. Features some really nice female lead vocals (by Nita Hughes, who I believe is now a published novelist, and whose photo may be gracing the album cover!).

Here’s where things get a little vague. Back cover (which features that gorgeous photo of an Oregon beach) says it’s pressed by M.V Sullivan Publishing from Atlanta. The liner notes are by Matt Sullivan (no doubt M.V. Sullivan himself), which says he’s the composer and suggests he’s the guitarist on the album. It also says that he composed two songs for his "movie" after being taught to play the guitar in Dallas in 1960; then traveled extensively for a decade, and after another few years, completed the project, adding at the end: "If you like the music, you’ll like my movie". And since the song titles read like a movie score, I’d say this is some kind of a soundtrack. The "Main Theme" is a song called "Journey To The Sun" - so I figured that’s the name of the film. Well, there IS a film by that title that shows up on web searches, but it’s from 2001 and clearly has nothing to do with this project (which was completed in 1975). So maybe this is a soundtrack to a film that was never made? Or never distributed? Or is so obscure that it just doesn’t show up on the web? Your guess is as good as mine…"
