Grading Scale:
Mint (M) - A perfect 10. No visible or audible defects. I seldom use this grade.
Near Mint (NM) - Almost perfect. 9 out of 10. May be a few minor imperfections, best viewed with a magnifying glass. This record was probably played very little and handled with extreme care during it's lifetime. 99% of the time, this will be our top grade for a used record.
Very Good++ (VG++) - 8 out of 10. VERY, VERY close to near mint, but may have one or two minor issues that are more noticeable. For example: it may look NM, but has faint surface noise when played. OR: it may sound perfect, but has a few minor scuffs or scratches (slightly more so then a NM record). Or a combination of the two. Same goes for the cover. It would be NM, except for minor yellowing, or maybe some other small mark that overall does not take away from a thoroughly EXCELLENT record.
Very Good+ (VG+) - 7 out of 10. Has a few minor blemishes, slightly more visible then on a NM or VG++ record. The vinyl probably has a few small scuffs and/or few light scratches per side. Some surface noise may be audible between tracks, but you can assume that the music still sounds excellent throughout. The cover will have a few small blemishes, but you can also assume that all the original artwork is intact and still looks nice. All in all, a great record to own.
Very Good (VG) - A six on the scale of 10. Similar to a VG+ record, except that the flaws will be a little more noticeable. Will definitely be minor surface noise between tracks and/or during quiet musical passages--and even a pop or two during a louder section. These still do not overwhelm the music. Other then this, the sound will still be fairly clean. The cover probably has a few flaws, a few more then a VG+ record would have. A VG cover will have between 2 and 3 of the following defects: ring wear, a seam split, a hole, a rip, yellowing, writing or slight moisture damage. These flaw(s) do not destroy the integrity of the cover. IT IS STILL A NICE COVER. Not for the extremely picky, but most would probably be happy to have this in their collection. A record that is still a keeper and an enjoyable listen.
Very Good- (VG-) - As you would expect, falls in between VERY GOOD and simply GOOD. A VG MINUS record would be a 5 out of 10, or just slightly below average. Will be worn, but still somewhat decent. Audiophiles might not be happy, unless it is an extremely rare find. The more casual listener will still enjoy the music and cover, despite it's obvious flaws.
Good (G) - 4 out of 10. Sure, it's far from the best, but it's still OK-- especially if the music is loud, rocking, funky or swinging. The vinyl and/or cover will have numerous scuffs, scratches and/or other defects. Still, it should at least play through without skipping. It may have MINOR water damage, but nothing that has completely destroyed the cover or record. Perhaps someone has marked on it with a pen somewhere. There might be a seam split or two. You will definitely hear minor to moderate surface noise throughout, but probably not to the point where it overpowers the music. In other words, still could be playable and enjoyable, but definitely not for serious audiophiles.
Fair/Poor (FP)** - 3 and below. Definitely pretty beat. Still might have some play left, but stay away unless you are a genuine low fidelity fanatic. If it's an extremely rare or unique record, it may do until a better copy comes your way.
** It will be rare that we will sell anything below "Good" on ebay. FP records are usually reserved for flea markets, garage sales, or the trash. At any rate, records advertised below VG+ will usually come with a specific list of defects so you can decide for yourself. We will also refund your money if you are really unhappy with your purchase. See our full return policy for details.
