Record Grading
Mint (M) – as perfect as an imperfect object can be, rarely, if ever, used
Near Mint (NM) – the record looks unplayed, with no obvious signs of mishandling, as nice a condition as mere mortals can hope to possess
Very Good Plus (VG+) – a very well looked after record, it has been kept in excellent condition, with some signs of use, that shouldn’t affect the sound much
Very Good (VG) – these records have seen some life, they have been enjoyed before and are still enjoyable overall but will have some obvious defects that affect the sound
Good Plus (G+) – these records have been played to the point that they have obviously deteriorated in quality, with invasive surface noise that may overpower the music, but should play without skipping
Good (G) – Should play without skipping, only really used as a collection filler
Poor (P) – the record may skip and is pretty much unplayable, only for things of exceptional rarity

Many factors contribute to the sound of a record, these include:
Pressing quality / quality of materials used to press the record:
Condition is not everything in record collecting, some brand new records will play with background noise, and it is very unusual for a record to be dead silent throughout, even the most beautifully pressed record will have some imperfections that affect the sound to one degree or another
Mastering / Master Tape:
The recording process and mastering of an album plays a big role in the overall sound quality of a record, background noise can be present in the master recording and not caused by the record.
Equipment:
not all turntables are created equally, some decks / styluses will skip or jump easier than others, it is well worth the investment for a sturdy turntable and decent stylus
Dust/static:
Dust affects the sound of a record, all records benefit greatly from a professional clean.
