Description

I do not sell copies or bootleg material.

Gatefold LP pressing on Decca of their 1968 Mono album. Mick Taylor, Stephen Thompson and Colin Allen all played with Mayall on the album. The outer sleeve is not faded at all and there are no tears or splits. The internal gatefold is clean with excellent colour photos. Good spine and no writing or additional labels stuck on. All matrix numbers and catalogue details indicate this is a genuine Mono First Press.
The disc plays beautifully with strong bass and Mono clarity on my Linn/Naim - Nait/ Kef Reference Foundry speakers. Again, no labels stuck on or writing. The labels have slight spindle wear and are clear with the red background and silver lettering.
I deliver via signed and tracked delivery. I use reinforced cardboard cases and pack the disc separately from the sleeves. I replace old inners with anti-static polythene liners and enclose a plastic cover for storage.
REVIEW:
Reckoned by many, especially those coming at it from a rock rather than pure blues angle, to be John Mayall’s finest hour, Laurel Canyon owes much of its fame to the starring appearance of Mick Taylor, then only 19. Within a year he was a Rolling Stone, and this album shows why he got the call; Keith Richards himself called him a virtuoso, and together, they revolutionised the Stones’ sound. Taylor’s gifts are on full display here, from the opening track, Vacation, to the epic closer, Fly Tomorrow; this starts off as a tabla-inflected quiet blues before morphing into a firework display of lead guitar, slightly reminiscent of Duane Allman’s contribution to Boz Scaggs’ Loan Me a Dime, recorded the following year (and for my money the greatest piece of lead guitar ever to emerge from a recording studio).
It’s not all about Mick, of course. Mayall himself is on medal-wining form here, on a variety of instruments plus his trademark reedy voice, and the two are joined by Steve Thompson and Colin Allen, later bass and drums in Stone the Crows. The writing is uniformly as excellent as the playing, and comprises a narrative of Mayall’s experiences during a few weeks in California in 1968 – a real ‘Englishman abroad’. There are encounters with fellow musicians: Frank Zappa (on 2401) and Bob Hite (The Bear), and at least two romances, lucky man, plus their emotional and what sounds like medical consequences (Medicine Man: ‘got a little trouble… I’m out of circulation, take me to your medicine man’). The music ranges from straight-ahead blues to all-out rock, and there is a sparkling guest appearance from Peter Green ((on First Time Alone), contributing distant-sounding accents as only he could. The whole thing was recorded, astonishingly, in three days.
This is a near to rock as this otherwise blues purist ever came, and that’s a source of regret, because he pulled off the change with ease here. Mayall would return to California on a more permanent basis in the 1970s. You can only hope he enjoyed himself as much as he clearly did on this trip.
