READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
So with that said…
John Lennon LP Live Peace in Toronto Undocumented Inner Ghost Capitol No SW Prefix!
Very strange pressing out of Jacksonville. I bought a box of 25 copies when I was working at Sound Odyssey in the early 1980’s, and I noticed that two copies had black inner sleeves. I was hopeful that I’d discovered an unknown Apple sleeve for LP’s, but this one, although it looks identical to the 45 Apple sleeve, does not have “Apple” printed on it in green.
**At that time, I showed it around to my collector friends, and in fact, one friend had a copy of Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band with this sleeve.
About a decade or so ago, I’d asked our collector community leader Perry Cox about it, but he said that he had not seen nor heard of them either.
Very recently, I ran this sleeve past a fellow collector friend of mine, Jay Clayton. Jay is a very good researcher, and after having posted this sleeve to a Capitol/Apple blog, he was able to turn up copies of Badfinger’s “No Dice” and “Straight Up,” which had this sleeve, and a further copy of the “El Topo” soundtrack WITH photos.
We were able to conclude that these sleeves, whatever their purposes and origins, had been issued with Apple titles from at least 1969 through 1972, and that they are very rare. It’s possible that these were prototype sleeves for Apple LP’s, or else as Perry suggested, they may have been overstock sleeves from another Capitol title.
**There are other rare features to this copy:
**The catalogue number on the labels are simply “3362,” rather than “SW-3362.” (See compere photo.)
These are the hardest-to-find labels, even more so than the copies with the Capitol logos on Side 2, which themselves aren’t easy at all to find!
**The Side 2 label is in fact, a Ghost Capitol label, very faintly having the “Subsidiary of…” text barely visible. It’s nearly undetectable on this copy, but I brightened the photos significantly in order to get it to show. If you don’t see it right away, back up from your computer screen to view it.
Vinyl--- VG+/VG+. Straight out of the shrink, this copy had manufacturer’s defects and light scratches, as many copies of this album do. Otherwise, the vinyl shines like new.
Plates--- Z5/Z6. Letter “O” in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Jacksonville.
Cover--- NM/NM. Still in shrink.
Breathe Holes--- There is one breathe hole on the front cover, due north of the cloud.
Labels--- NM/NM. Side 1 label has a cool little manufacturer’s defect of a popped bubble in the gloss. NO SPINDLE MARKS.
Calendar--- EX. Very little fading over the years, otherwise, this is a very nice calendar.
Capitol Inner Sleeve--- VG+. Would grade Excellent, except for some damage to the bottom of the sleeve from the metal spiral-bound calendar and a side seam split about 3 inches long. Sorry!
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original Capitol inner sleeve en route.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
