Description
Exceptionally rare engineer's test pressings for the original mono release of John Coltrane's "Coltrane Jazz" on Atlantic 1354, his second record for the label. These single-sided disks - both hand-dated 11/16/60, just three weeks after the last (10/21/60) session of three that constitute this album - were for in-house distribution only, for review by Tom Dowd and Nesuhi Ertegun's production team. Often, Atlantic would produce several sets of these test pressings, each with slightly different mixes, until the desirable sound stage had been established. Consequently, these pressings will frequently have a unique sound stage, different from the issued version. In this example, Side 1 of the test pressing has a matrix #11697-A-C (the "A" x-ed out), while Side 1 of the red and purple label commercial issue has a matrix #11697-B-D (with the "B" x-ed out). Furthermore, these test pressings are far earlier in the pre-production stage than those that are distributed just prior to - or concurrent with - label and jacket production. Both disks are in near-new condition; perhaps played once or twice.
Personnel includes McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis, and Elvin Jones.
