Here is a very rare offering from Blue Note Records. John Coltrane "Blue Train" (Blue Note 1577 STEREO w/Gold Label). This is a DEEP GROOVE edition and is quite unique in that the address for Blue Note Records on the jacket reads 43 West 61st street, where the information on the LP itself show West 63rd street. We have not seen this discrepancy before and feel it might be a very limited edition. This appears to be a first edition pressing as well (Rare). Using the "Goldmine Grading System" (see link below) the album is in Very good shape, the cover shows some wear and the four corners are in good condition. Spindle marks are minor. The original owner did write the length of time next to the titles on the back cover, but other than that the biographical literature is clean and the pictures on the bottom are in nice condition. The vinyl itself is not "mint" but plays with minor ticks but not enough to disturb the musical presentation. RVG STEREO is imprinted in the lead in area on the record.

"Blue Train" was the only album that Coltrane recorded as a leader for Blue Note Records. Blue Train, his lush yet emotionally throbbing set with Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums) recorded in 1957.
Coltrane was actually under contract to another label (Prestige) when he recorded Blue Train for Blue Note. Re-issue audio producer Michael Cuscuna explains that, "In late 1956 or early 1957, before he signed with Prestige, Coltrane went up to Blue Note’s offices to ask Alfred Lion for some Sidney Bechet albums. He and Alfred talked about a record deal, but Francis Wolff, who handled the artist contracts, had gone for the day. Coltrane took his Bechet LPs and a small advance, saying he would come back in a few days. He didn’t and the whole thing seemed forgotten." "In early 1957," Cuscuna continues, "Coltrane signed with Prestige. But he remembered the discussion with Alfred and the advance and insisted upon making an album for Blue Note to honor his commitment."
