Description

On offer here an insanely rare and great lp, which is a key recording in the career of Jimmy Page and nearly impossible to find as a standard issue, let alone an acetate!! This could well be UNIQUE!!!

In 1965 Jimmy Page was already well known as an ace session man, and had a great reputation amongst musicians in this country, but was relatively unknown to the general public. Around this time he hooked up with Bobby Graham, who was a young session drummer/producer at the fontana label, and they forged a working relationship that resulted in the release of the rare, very expensive and truly excellent singles 'she just satisfies'and 'skin deep'/'zoom widge and wag'. Both were collaborations between page and Graham, as were a set of unissued acetates they recorded as ' the talismen '

Less well known than those efforts is this lp 'British Percussion', by 'Le London All Star'- a set of recordings very much cut from the same cloth as those collaborations. Unlike the regular workady sessions these guys recorded at the time for other artists, three of the 12 tracks on this album were written by page and graham, and they sound like it- the page guitar touch isn't politely hiding behind orchestration on this record, it is well to the fore, with heavy fuzz riffing on most tracks, and on a totally blistering solo for the track 'lord byron blues' I cannot rave about this track too much- it really is one of the most amazing page solos, with some evil fuzz that'll take the top of your head off. The track 'stop the drums' is similar to some of the sutch and heavy friends era recordings, only better produced, and with a great drum battle at the end, that leaves nothing standing in it's wake...unbelievable. The stereo mix is fantastic- it sounds very much as if all the musicians were in the room at the same time- there's no artificial  or unnatural sounding separation.  I can't believe this lp isn't better documented...there was an expensive japanese boot a while back...but aside from that an original is your only option.

OR!! This acetate This is stamped in the centre 4 65- predating the official release date of the lp. I cannot say whether this contains any alternative versions or not. What I can say, is that despite the average condition (vg or vg-), this record plays fantastically. Normally acetates play worse than they look, but this plays better than it looks, and if I'm honest it doesn't look too bad- just a normal looking sixties lp. There is low level crackling here and there, but the cut of the acetate is so loud that the music very much takes over- this is a very loud cut record- I wonder if the standard pressing was cut as deafening as this?

I am selling this with a crappy conditioned example of the original sleeve- Being an acetate, of course this never came with a printed sleeve to start with, but I managed to track down a copy from a collector who had a cracked original lp when he upgraded. It's not pretty, but it's just about in one piece, and has the track details (amusing poorly translated from french) and song titles.

This is a rare record, and I am selling it without reserve- I would like to get a decent amount for this....It is very obscure, and sometimes the more obscure things have a tendency to sell for less money...Bid what you think it is worth..It is much rarer than a mono piper, a brunswick 'generation' or tangerine dream by Kaleidoscope, if that means anything....added to that, it totally rocks, and features three songs written by Jimmy Page, around the same time as his legendary solo single, and a good year or two before he joined the yardbirds- SOME OF HIS EARLIEST SONGWRITING CREDITS!...MASSIVELY RARE!
