Description
Over the next few weeks, I'll be selling off some rarities from the collection of Tom Lax (me, founder, Siltbreeze Records, sorry for the 3rd person silliness) & I'm starting with some big ones.
This is an original copy of the legendary 'Slit and Pre-Slit' lp, recorded, produced & manufactured by the one & only James Michael Shepard. Released in 1977 in an edition of 100 copies. The first 20 or so were all handmade, painted, fabricated, etc. These given away to various Rock luminaries the band respected &/or had shared the stage with. In addition, a few of these copies were sold locally to support the band's need for new guitar strings, drum sticks & the like. This is #021 & was purchased from Moles Records in Columbus Ohio sometime in the early 80's. As you can see from the photo's provided, this one bears some striking originality; the watercolour painted front, handwritten store ID upper left + Shepard's (then) address lower left. Also the remnant of the original price sticker. The back is also handpainted & handwritten, along w/a 4" vertical slit cut down middle bottom that reads 'A Vertical Slit Production', while in the bottom right corner reads, "'But I guess It Matters Which Way She's Laying Okay?", which to me is classic Shepard wit. Also, the inner sleeve was stamp pressed, not sure how many other copies got that touch. I'm also including a letter from Shepard to me from sometime in the early 80's. It bears no semblance to the lp, other than it is a thank you letter written after a trip to Phila & I had no where to put it, so I slipped into the the Slit/Pre-Slit jacket. And that's where it's resided for the last 25 years. I agonized over whether to include & in the end decided to keep it intact simply because (to me) it's become part & parcel of this wonderful lp in a most personal way. The lp jacket is in pretty great shape I'd say' a couple of corner dings-which is how it came-& overall very strong. There is modest ring wear top front, but no split seams or spine damage. The vinyl has always played great. Mind you, it's a long lp & only 100 pressed, so it's hard to kn ow how pristine any copies sounded. I never had a problem. So this is it-time for a new home. I will conclude by saying after this auction ends, the winner will be contacted w/accurate shipping/freight costs. Inside the US I'm not so worried, but anyone overseas, we're gonna talk INSURANCE.
