Description

Rare JOE HENDERSON, "Page One" Blue Note 4140 LP, with original blue note insert sleeve. Blue Note Records BLP 4140 (Mono). Blue and White, New York Label with "VAN GELDER" & Ear mark in Deadwax Trailing. EX+/EX+. This LP came from a collection once owned by local Seattle area Jazz DJ and like nearly all of his LPs was rarely played if at all! This 1963 session was Henderson's debut as a leader, and it introduced a strikingly individualistic tenor saxophonist, with a distinctively muscular sound and approach, as well as a talent for finding a personal route through the dominant tenor styles of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. At the time of the session, Henderson worked regularly in a quintet with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham, and the two enjoyed a special chemistry apparent on several Blue Note recordings under their individual names. One unusual facet is the hard-bop take on the then emerging bossa nova, apparent in the first recording of Dorham's now standard "Blue Bossa," on which Henderson's thoughtful construction is apparent, and the saxophonist's own coiling Latin tune, "Recorda Me." Pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Pete LaRoca provide more than solid support for a date that's as often reflective as it is forceful. Highly recommended for jazz aficionados. Really amazing album, another great find!

Side 1: Blue Bossa, La Mesha, Homestretch.
Side 2: Recorda-Me, Jinrikisha, Out of the Night.

Credits: Kenny Dorham (Trumpet), Joe Henderson (Tenor Sax), McCoy Tyner (Piano), Butch Warren (Bass), Pete LaRoca (Drums).
Cover has very slight wear, and slight unnoticeable water stain (see photo) on front, preventing NM grade. Record has a couple light scuffy scratches, otherwise it would be in Near Mint condition! We guarantee all of our LPs to be as described.
