Jay-Z's second release, IN MY LIFETIME, came out at the right time, just as Puff Daddy had helped rap come into the mainstream. It still retained that "underground" tip and incorporated more party-starting beats without seeming overly flashy.
His lyrics are both well-delivered, interesting and EXPLICIT. The beats are funky, inspired, rarely boring, and they complement the songs well. Jay-Z smartly kicks off his disc with two short primo-laced tracks, and that sets the tone perfectly as well as including Puff Daddy and L’il Kim as guest artists.
