Sheffield Lab made the first modern direct disc record. Each side is recorded live without interruption as a "master lacquer disc" is cut. No tape recorder is used, thus creating a dramatic reduction in distortion as well as an equally dramatic increase in "dynamic range". In the direct disc method the production of each album is limited to a finite number of special editions, eventually making these records valuable collector's items. This company has received Grammy Awards for excellence in engineering for many of their albums and is considered one of the finest sources of sonic fidelity in a record album.
