Hi, I am Mike, now 48 and have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 34 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and elusive items now. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get. The only thing I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. Variation can sometimes occur too in colour of the label scans and labels taken next to the sleeve with a digital camera, the scanned full label pictures should be the most accurate. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert. Label/Format: Vertigo – Full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two. Please note also, this is one of the earliest pressings ever on this famous label. This supreme example include the text ‘A Philips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position of the text side label. Only the earliest pressed Vertigo’s ever included this rare text.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate and quite possibly the best of the genuinely early Spirals I have ever seen. Just a couple of faint spindle marks on each side, the owner told it had been played just once and I would not argue for a second, this is an stunning vintage Vertigo and few will compare. Ultra clean and highly attractive with no grubbiness or discolour to the ‘white side’. Simply stunning Spirals with the large formats and rare Philips text, side two retains a superb snowy white finish that is as fresh and clean as press day. A very snug fit on my Rega spindle, it even retains a small piece of ‘flash’ residue still attached to the hole rim, maybe just visible on my scan. The large spiral on side one has the design perfect right up to the very hole rims with no chipping or wear at all. The only ‘blemish’, if indeed you can it that, is a tiny manufacture ink smudge on the fourth white spiral line from the hole (I think I am getting too carried away now). These labels are SUPERB.

Cat Number: VO2 847 901 VTY.

Mode: Stereo.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: Gt Britain.

Rarity: Scarce on Spiral. Including the ‘Philips’ label text, this is quite rare and in this condition, well it should speak for itself. All spirals are getting harder to find all the time, near mint examples are highly elusive with fewer becoming available. Including one of the most famous Spiral covers too, that is no less delicate than most of the others, this is a fantastic copy that should please most collectors of this highly desirable label.

Original Year of Release: 1969

Matrix Nos: 847901 A1 420 11 / 847901 2Y2 420 11 (both sides have VO numbers struck through).

Musicians: Ray Owen - lead vocals; Glenn Campbell - steel guitar, mandolin, marimbas, vocals; Chris Mercer - sax electric and acoustic piano, organ; Neil Hubard - guitars; Keith Ellis - bass guitar, vocal; Pete Dobson - drums, percussion.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The band’s first (and probably best) album and the second title within the highly sort-after Spiral catalogue – probably the most famous and collectable progressive label of them all. Boasting too one of the very best and famous covers too - this is always one of my favourite albums to offer and this is a beauty. Solid, earthy blues-rock featuring a supreme version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Who do you Love’ (also covered by The Doors on Absolutely Live). This copy on offer features a superb ‘Philips’ product’ full spiral record (near Mint) that plays to perfection and comes in its spiral inner. The cover looks terrific, very wear-prone like most spiral covers, but this one does that famous ‘Lucy’ proud. For collectors wanting a real early and barely played Juicy Lucy, this copy is almost the supreme example and will never be beaten easily.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: all but a couple of the Spiral album covers were ever laminated and this dark cover often fares worse than many. Rubbing, fading, grubbiness, ringwear and sticker tears are all common and seldom seen with little and this has hardly anything at all.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+++, as near to Mint(-) as any Spiral cover gets, this is the earliest example and the second in the catalogue. An unlaminated gatefold format that is highly vulnerable to wear, especially ringwear and rubbing. This one has the original WARNING — Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings. etc inside the gatefold, later versions had the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘this label’. This was printed and made in Great Britain.

Cover Front: Very attractive indeed with deep colour and no fading. No rubbing and ultra clean too with few traces of ever being handled. Unforgiving covers that show all blemishes freely, this has few at all, even with angled viewing this beautiful front reveal practically nothing, even surface marks. It is practically crease-free too with no ringmarks. The tiniest burr trace near the bottom right corner but that’s about it and this wonderful ‘Lucy’ will seldom be seen better than this.

Cover Back: Very similar again to the front with just a very light surface crease near the right edge and the odd very faint rub trace (if being critical). No ringwear and only the faintest trace of a record pressmark. The VO 2 – 847 901 VTY top right text is pristine. A delight to see the classic Spiral covers looking like this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Emphasise again, this has the original ‘Vertigo’ warning inside. Little short of perfect, the only microscopic blemish is a tiny crease on the foldline bottom, right – almost looking for things that hardly need to be mentioned to be honest, this again is superb.

Top Edges: Very slight rubbing to the centre of the back edge, that apart both near perfect.

Bottom Edges: Near wear free with just a light rub trace on the back right corner area.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Tiny burr rub on the front bottom as stated but clean, sharp with little wear at all and no feathering. Record entered on this right outside back edge is practically perfect.

Spine and Text: A truly superb spine. Thick and solid, very straight with no compression and square, both right edges meet up near perfectly together. Although some of the text is very fine, all is fully intact and showing no wear at all including the delicate VO 2 number. Even on the foldlines, top and bottom are unworn with all ink intact and unrubbed, this is so unusual on these and even the very top and bottom corner areas have minimal rubbing.

Corners: Tiny and light tip rubs on a couple, the very least anyone could hopefully expect. These all retain splendid well defined shape.

Cover Summary: Without doubt, one of the very best original Juicy Lucy covers I have seen. Given its age and vulnerability to wear, this ‘grand old lady’ will be difficult to find much better these days and most Spiral collectors should treasure it.

The Inner: Around EX(-), this is lined and its still firmly attached but ruffled. All sealed edges are unsplit or torn, it does have some mild age toning and edge gum browning. One crease line at the top, this should be visible on my picture and some milder secondary creases too. Not a bad one overall and many are missing these days. I have seen better, but I prefer not to swap these spiral inners unless absolutely neccessary and this one came with the record.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and practically Mint (a word I use very sparingly, but this is as near as they get). One of the very best early pressed ‘Lucy’s’ I have yet seen and one of the best spiral albums too, ‘Philips’ examples are rare and most will be heavily played and in poor conditions. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, jet black and heavier pressed than later Spiral records. A copy now played twice after my play-grade and the cleaness and freshness of this copy will excite vinyl fans wanting this title. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, undistorted sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album, this does have a few quieter passages. Few available copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I know for sure this record has barely been played and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, within in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage, early Spiral album – a delight from start to finish. This copy could prove near impossible indeed to find significantly better especially such an early ‘Philips’ copy.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.

All records are sent in plastic covers with the record taken OUT of the sleeve and sent in professional mailers with FOUR proper stiffners for extra protection (if space allows). More expensive items are also inserted into a de-luxe heavy duty padded bag AS WELL to give that extra protection. I truly want ALL my items to arrive to their destination in the same condition they leave me. I will also include in most cases a brand new inner, but will include the original inner if available.
