On Jun-28-06 at 06:15:54 PDT, seller added the following information: Well, thanks for looking down HERE! This thing got bid on so fast, I never got the chance to put in my rant about how great Joyce Cooling is... (she is!!) Therefor the rant follows here, in the basement:
There have been very few great female guitarists to really make it in the past century, and extremely few in jazz! If you were maimed in the war and lost all of one hand and most of the other, you could still count on your fingers the number of top rate female guitarists playing jazz today. Basically you have Lenni Stern, Mimi Fox, Emily Remler and you have Joyce Cooling. It is San Francisco's great fortune to have both Mimi and Joyce living in The City On The Hill.
CAMEO -a really great Brazilian Jazz breeze. Joyce Cooling, contemporary fusion guitar master, recorded this, her debut LP back in 1988, with Jay Wagner of VIVA BRAZIL and her Brazilian friends, Claudio Amaral, Rubens Moura, Helio Garcia plus other special guests. Cameo is a solid Brazilian groove, still holding up strong today. One of the highlights of this album is the Brazilian AOR classic; " It's you", which belatedly became a quite recent club hit in UK and Japan!
Cameo captures the feel and swing of Brazil mixed with pop and jazz. "Voo Doo Chicken," "Ve" and "Glad Rap" showcase Cooling's fascination for Brazilian music, but at the same time she's able to incorporate her stinging, modern style of guitar-playing faintly reminiscent of Emily Remler. Plus, Cooling is a gifted singer as well. She clearly showed she had what it takes at the very beginning. The LP is entirely written, produced and arranged by Cooling and Wagner. It was the culmination of all they had worked toward at that time; yet it proved to be a new beginning.
Becoming a top attraction, she appeared at many of the major West Coast jazz festivals and expanded her reach by playing in the Philippines, Mexico, and Colombia, performing with such jazz giants as Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, and Charlie Byrd.
Bay Area and festival jazz fans knew and loved Joyce Cooling as one of the region's most dynamic and popular contemporary jazz guitarists long before her San Francisco-inspired chart-topping single, "South of Market", took the jazz world by storm in 1997. Since then, Cooling has thrilled audiences around the world with her fluid, swinging style, garnering critical praise and a bevy of industry awards along the way. The South Of Market single and her PLAYING IT COOL album soared to #1 on the Gavin Report and R&R's NAC/smooth jazz charts where it remained there for five consecutive weeks.
She began piling up the awards: Best Jazz Guitarist Of The Year (female) - Gibson Guitar Awards/ Best New Talent (Smooth Jazz) - Jazziz Readers Poll/ Jazz Trax Debut Artist of the Year/ #1 single ("South Of Market") and #1 CD in the country for five consecutive weeks - R&R NAC/Smooth Jazz Trax charts/ . Every new album she releases gets the same result; more #1 singles and more #1 CD awards.
<> <><><> ••••••••••••• <> ••••••••••••• <><><> <> Drawing upon a wide palette of influences ranging from Brazilian guitarist/singer/songwriter João Bosco to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cooling's first love was jazz. "Everything crystallized when I heard Wes Montgomery's solo on If You Could See Me Now. From then on, it was as if guitar had chosen me.""It was the old days - 1988 to be exact", says Cooling, "and we just went in as a band and recorded. When we came out of the studio, which was basically a basement with an 8-track recorder, we had a record. Because we all had thousands of hours playing together live, it just worked. Pure and simple."
It seems as though everyone else agreed. After hearing Cameo the Gavin Report raved, "We're knocked out", and all of the Bay Area Jazz/Adult stations and The Wave in Los Angeles unanimously added multiple tracks. Cameo and the follow up live performances received more "knockout" reviews from the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, and the Oakland Tribune to name a few. It was at one of these performances, at Yoshi's, I'm told, that she and Jay signed the LP cover.
This LP is one of a very few ever produced, back in 1988, and it is still in superb NEAR MINT condition (OK, quibblers can call the cover VG++ because of the "writing" on the back.) But I don't think the signatures detract one bit! Do you??
<> <><><> ••••••••••••• <> ••••••••••••• <><><> <>A final word about the "female gutarist" thing, then we'll wind down the rant: Women have proven they can play with the best of the men in many genres; Blues, rock, Slack Key, Metal, Prog, Bluegrass, Rockabilly and folk (and I don't just mean the usual "singer/songwriter" strummer), I mean the Axe Queens!
Some of the other fine ladies making the guitar sing like a banshee (or an angel) these days are: Kaki King, Liona Boyd, Kimberly Allison, Kristin Hersh (one of my faves!), Shredmmistress Rynata, Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block , Shemekia Copeland and Kat Bjelland. Not to forget the great June Millington (of FANNY fame) back in the late '60s, followed by Joan Jett and Lita Ford. ~yes, I'm forgetting some, I'm certain... fill in your favorite here_________________.
In JAPAN, the ladies really stand up tall! Some of the most devestating and original female guitarists I have heard come from the Land of The Rising Sun -Naoko Yamano of Shonen Knife; -Agata of Melt Banana; -Aiha Higurashi of Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her -and my own favorites; -Mine Nakao and Fusao Toda of the phenomenal ANGEL IN HEAVY SYRUP.
All these great players deserve more attention and respect for their brilliance. (You only knew 5 or 6 of the names above? ...that proves my point.) Go out and listen to the women. They got something to say!
