JONI MITCHELL
For The Roses
ORIGINAL UK ASYLUM (SYLA 8753) FIRST PRESSING (December 1972) OF JONI MITCHELL'S SUPERB "For The Roses" LP IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION (I don't think this copy has EVER been played) - THE LABELS ARE CLEAN AND BRIGHT WITH NO SPINDLE TRACES AND THE VINYL SURFACES ARE UNMARKED AND SHINE LIKE-NEW - DELIVERING PRACTICALLY MINT AUDIO ON MY SYSTEM (see detailed play assessment below) WITH A CRYSTAL CLEAR, CLEAN, SHARP AND FRESH SOUND (just about as good as it gets)
AND THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE FIRST ISSUE MATT "Garrod & Lofthouse" CENTRE LOADING TRI-GATEFOLD SLEEVE (date coded '7212' - 1972, December') WHICH IS COMPLETELY MINT AND LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE IT WAS MADE YESTERDAY - A REALLY EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF A BEAUTIFUL LP AND VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
FIRST PRESS MATRIX NUMBERS: SYLA 8753 A-1 / SYLA 8753 B-1 (both machine stamped)
This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell's work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums.
"The Arrangement," "Rainy Night House," and "Woodstock" contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal stretches in later selections such as "Down to You" from Court and Spark.
Jazz elements are noticeable in the wind solos of "For Free" and "Conversation," exhibiting an important influence that would extend as late as Mingus.
The unusually poignant desolation of "The Arrangement" would surface more strongly in Blue.
A number of the selections here ("Willy" and "Blue Boy") use piano rather than guitar accompaniment; arrangements here are often more colourful and complex than before, utilising cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion.
Mitchell sings more clearly and expressively than on prior albums, most strikingly so on "Woodstock," her celebration of the pivotal 1960s New York rock festival. This number, given a haunting electric piano accompaniment, is sung in a gutsy, raw, soulful manner; the selection proves amply that pop music anthems don't all have to be loud production numbers.
Songs here take many moods, ranging from the sunny, easygoing "Morning Morgantown" (a charming small-town portrait) to the nervously energetic "Conversation" (about a love triangle in the making) to the cryptically spooky "The Priest" (presenting the speaker's love for a Spartan man) to the sweetly sentimental classic "The Circle Game" (denoting the passage of time in touching terms) to the bouncy and vibrant single "Big Yellow Taxi" (with humorous lyrics on ecological matters) to the plummy, sumptuous title track (a celebration of creativity in all its manifestations).
This album is yet another essential release in Mitchell's recorded canon.
Side 1: Morning Morgantown / For Free / Conversation / Ladies Of The Canyon / Willy / The Arrangement
Side 2: Rainy Night Horse / The Priest / Blue Boy / Big Yellow Taxi / Woodstock / The Circle Game
LABELS: Like new - clean and bright with no spindle traces - I don't think this copy has ever been played
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces are again, like new with their original deep glossy sheen and they are completely unmarked
VINYL Audio: Beautiful LP with outstanding audio quality - crystal clear, sharp, warm and vibrant sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no surface noise and barely any 'ticks' (really hardly any at all, and as I would say that as this copy is basically unplayed I would consider any of these extremely minor 'ticks' unavoidable, and they are extremely minor). The LP plays throughout, in my opinion, to highest possible standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion and is critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - beautiful copy - the finest I have heard and the closest to MINT you are ever likely to find
SLEEVE: This first issue tri-gatefold, centre loading G&L matt sleeve is in stone-cold MINT condition - absolutely nothing to fault it - pristine example and pretty unbeatable
