Surrender to Jonathan was Jonathan Richman's return to a major label, and he constructed the album as a showcase of his finest, or at least most notorious, songs of the early '90s. "Egyptian Reggae" and "I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar" are hauled out of the woodwork and given moderately polished reworkings by Andy Paley. There are now a couple of worthy additions to his set list, "Not Just a 'Plus One' on the Guest List Anymore" and "Surrender."

After nearly a decade of annual releases on Rounder, Jonathan Richman signed with Neil Young's Vapor label (Warner Bros.). SURRENDER TO JONATHAN is Richman's first album for Vapor and he smartly uses the opportunity for a broader audience to lure new listeners into his quirky, endearing world. Producer Andy Paley, who worked with Richman decades earlier in Boston, clearly knows the right approach and a casual atmospheric ease underscores the natural believability of the songs.
Horns and accordion appear on a few songs. Whether the result of a larger recording budget or not, they fit nicely and answer the question, "What would horns on a Jonathan Richman album sound like?" Three older songs are revisited, "Egyptian Reggae," "To Hide A Little Thought" and "I Was Dancing In the Lesbian Bar."

Editorial reviews 3 Stars (out of 5) - ...a strong return to form for the adenoidal one, the usual breezy pop melodies propped up by a fruitily belligerent horn section and a succession of Gallic-flavoured accordion flourishes...
