THE JON BARTEL THING - SAME, US CAPITOL ST-274. 1969.

ORIGINAL US ISSUE, Still in the Shrink, Orig Lime Green Label.

Obscure US Psychy Rock with Blues/Jazzy touches. The album certainly has it's moments with most tracks penned by the producers Terry Philips & Jimmy Curtiss.

The highlights are 'Where Can I Hide', the excellent 'Listen To The Silence', a good version of 'Stormy Monday', 'There's Gotta Be Something Better', the catchy 'Time Machine', 'This Girl In Springfield' & the closing jazzy/blues instrumental, a version of Miles Davis' 'So What'. This seems to be a 'lost' album and one of the rarest Capitol LPs with copies seldom turning up.

This review was taken from the copy on gemm: 1969 found Curtiss and Perception having arranged a distribution deal with Capitol. It also saw the release of "The Jon Bartel Thing" - same line up, different, cooler name ... Co-produced by Curtiss and Terry Philips, the results made for one weird record. Showcasing a mixture of Curtiss-penned numbers (co-written with Ralph Green and Marcia Hillman), the album offered up a strange mixture of hard rock ('Where Can I Hide'), pop/rock ('This Girl In Springfield'), conventional soul ('No Doubt About It (He's Your Man)'), psych ('There's Gotta Be Something Better'), and conventional jazz (the instrumental 'So What') . Those diverse genres occasionally collided within the same composition (check out the totally bizarre 'Listen To the Silence'). A hard album to accurately describe (which may explain the absence of much info on the web), but if you were to imagine early Blood, Sweat and Tears with a singer who was better than David Clayton Thomas and a band with a harder rock orientation and you'd be in the right aural neighbourhood. Given the liner notes didn't provide a great deal of information, I'm going on the assumption that Bartel handled the lead vocals. If so, he had a great soul-influenced voice which made you wonder why producers Curtiss and company hadn't opted for a more conventional collection. To underscore how good his voice was, I've never been a big fan of the T-Bone Walker classic 'Stormy Monday', but these guys turned in a killer version of the track. I even liked the scatting section of the performance. Geez, never thought I'd say something like that! (For those of you really into this kind of stuff 'Freak Show' also showed up on the Curtiss Velvet Night project.)

A nice copy, record actually looks unplayed.

Condition is M-/EX (cover/record), cover has a cutout hole.

POSTAGE:

UK: £2.50 for the 1st LP (£3.00 for heavy sleeves/vinyl if over 500g/2LP Sets) then all additional LPs are FREE by 2nd class/standard parcels or courier depending on the size/value of the order.

1st class is a bit extra but the amount depends on the weight, please ask if you want it.

CDs are FREE.

7" Singles: £1 first, 50p each after.

Note: If the value is over £50 and weighs over 1 Kg, the flat rate cost will increase to £5.00 to include insurance/compensation, which is still less than cost.

EUROPE: 4 GBP for the 1st LP then additional single LPs are just 1.50 GBP each up to 5 or 6 LPs in total (under 2Kg), then starts over again with a separate package.

2LP sets: 5.50 GBP, additional single LPs are 1.50 GBP, additional 2LPs sets are 3 GBP.

1st CD is 1.50 GBP then additional CDs are 50p each.

7" Singles: 2 GBP, then 50p each.

For larger orders (up to 5 or 10 Kg limits, usually 16/17 or 33/34 LPs), I can send altogether in one package by courier for less depending on the destination.

REST OF WORLD: 7 GBP for the 1st LP then additional single LPs are 3 GBP each up to 6 LPs in total (under 2Kg), then starts over again with a separate package.

2LP sets: 10.00 GBP, additional single LPs are 3 GBP each, additional 2LP sets are 6.00 GBP.

1st CD is 2.50 GBP then additional CDs are 1 GBP each.

Surface mail is available on request for cheap LPs only, to the Rest of the World but delivery times are 6 to 8 weeks minimum!

Insurance/Registered Mail outside the UK is extra: 5.50 GBP for values up to 50 GBP, 8 GBP for values over 50 GBP.

DSR's

I don't think most buyers realise how strict ebay's policy of DSR's actually is.

Do you realise that any rating less than 5 has a negative impact on a seller's performance? Even though a 4 is supposed to be regarded as a good score it actually isn't good enough!

What I find particularly baffling are the buyers who leave positive feedback yet leave low DSR ratings (1,2) for 'item as described' which means they are unhappy but don't even bother to contact me....and therefore don't want the seller to sort out the problem! Crazy!

It is impossible for any seller to get all 100% of their grading spot on...especially when dealing with items such as records....yet a seller can still give you great service if they get something wrong....but you have to let them.

Then there are buyers who have left low DSR's for dispatch time when clearly they have not looked at the date of posting on the postage label and seem to have gone on how long a package has taken to get to them which of course is entirely down to the quality of the postal services which the seller has no control over.

I dispatch all my packages within 2 working days of being paid despite having as many as 40/50 packages to deal with at a time....yet the odd buyer has still left 1 & 2 stars for dispatch time!?!

Ebay's policy of DSR's is full of holes....and sellers get penalised if low DSR's are given even when it's not their fault. So please try and give 5s for all DSR's.

Buyers should only leave low DSR's when the service is terrible and a seller is unwilling to sort a problem out.

RECORD: PERFECT....AS NEW CONDITION, SO NO DETEORIATION IN THE SOUND QUALITY…..bear in mind that not all ‘new’ LPs are Mint because of the quality of the pressing etc....also SEALED/UNPLAYED LPs are sold as is.....

COVER: AS NEW CONDITION WITH NO OBVIOUS DEFECTS.......except maybe a deletion hole/cutout on a SEALED LP.

M- :

RECORD: SLIGHTY WORSE THAN M, LP may have several surface marks due to removal from it's sleeve etc....but certainly NO audible scratches....LP may have the occasional light crackle/hiss...but still in great condition.

COVER: SHOWS SIGNS OF BEING HANDLED WITH SLIGHT CREASING/WEAR...or may be a M cover with a very slight split seam or very slight showing of ring wear or a very slight sticker tear, but not all of these together.

EX:

RECORD: MOST REGUARLY PLAYED LPs KEPT WITH CARE FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY....LP may play with more hiss/crackle but not louder than the music......sometimes it may be a M or M- LP with one slight audible mark or a very slight edge warp but not affecting it.

COVER: SLIGHTLY MORE WEAR/CREASING/BENDING even some slight ring wear.....or may be a M or M- cover with a split seam(s) and minor sticker tears, but still nice.

VG+ :

RECORD: LP PLAYS WITH MORE NOISE DUE TO EITHER DIRT OR SLIGHTLY STRONGER SURFACE MARKS BUT STILL IS IN A VERY LISTENABLE CONDITION.....or it may be an LP which plays say M- but has one or a few audible marks/slight warp etc.....but still no skips/jumps.

COVER: HAS QUITE A LOT OF CEASING/BENDING often with FADING/RING WEAR/ STICKER TEARS/TEARS....or may be an EX cover with a split seam(s), but still acceptable.

VG:

RECORD: THE SOUND QUALITY OF THE LP IS AFFECTED BY SURFACE MARKS/ AUDIBLE MARKS or DIRT etc....but still plays through and is still in quite a REASONABLE condition.....it may be an LP which plays EX but has audible marks.....

COVER: PLENTY OF CREASING/BENDING/FADING/RING WEAR but still in one piece.

G: LP still plays through but is very noisy due to scratches/dirt etc....but still not totally trashed!!!

COVER: AS VG BUT TORN and starting to fall apart.

F/P: LP is trashed...for ornament purposes only...
