This 1969 recording is an ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL and CLASSIC old school style of Cuban Salsa album that features Johnny Pacheco's EVER TASTEFUL style of music and arrangements, and a style of sound that is slightly reminiscent of Sonóra Matancera at times, but that is STILL keeping in line with Pacheco's classic trademark Cuban Conjúnto style of sound too.

It's also WELL WORTH mentioning that this is THE FAMOUS album to have yielded the MEGA-MASSIVE HITS 1.La Eséncia del Guaguancó (written by Catalíno "Tite" Curet Alónso), 6.Sonero (written by Cheo Marquetti) and 7.Shalom Malecum (written by Justi Barreto) and that it isn't just a 3-song album as the whole song selection here is very varied and beyond any reproaches!

1.La Eséncia del Guaguancó is a FANTASTIC Cuban Conjúnto style of tune which I suspect is most probably influenced by the famous 1950's-1960's Conjúnto Chappottin musically speaking.

Otherwise, this track is not only a VERY SUCCESSFUL HIT, but also one of the very best tunes from this album with IMPECCABLE ARRANGEMENTS by Pacheco and VERY INTENSE vocals by "El Conde"!

2.Baila Vicente is a very happy, joyful and enticing Cuban "Salsa"/Són type of tune which features a musicality that I personally find VERY CONTAGIOUS and hard not to like!...

It's DEFINITELY another of those GREAT mid-tempo tunes (like all the tracks in this album are) that encourages Vicente to enjoy his dancing even further!...

4.Como Cocína la Gorda [How good the fat woman cooks] also goes along the same lines in terms of joyfulness, festivity and partying and features the classic double meaning of the woman who cooks very nicely... In this case, the woman happens to be the wife of the friend in question and musically speaking, it's another VERY NICE Cuban style of "Salsa" tune that is also very danceable!...

5.Sin Caña y sin Platanál & 6.Sonero are the two Son-Montúno tunes from this album and are two PARTICULARLY GOOD and SUBSTANTIAL versions of those songs!

6.Sonero (written by Cheo Marquetti, a Cuban composer, singer, bandleader and Bass player of the 1930's-60's) urges the Cuban Són singer not to forget his Són at the expense of Mambo and Rock'n'Roll and Pete "Conde" smartly updates the lyric by adding Boogaloo and Shing-a-ling instead (which were the PESTIFEROUS Anglo/American styles of "Latin" music from the mid to late 60's...)

Music wise, this HIGHLY INSPIRED version is not only BRILLIANT because Pacheco managed to keep the real essence of the tune, but also because he managed to add with his own style another dimension to this tune with particularly SUPERB musicianship, SUPERB (3 Trumpets) horn arrangements and VERY INTENSE vocals by "El Conde" AGAIN!

This tune also features a nice melancholic Tres-guitar solo in the middle by the way.

5.Sin Caña y sin Platanál (most probably written by the late Cuban Singer/Composer Wilfredo "Pio" Leyva) is a tune from this album that never got the recognition that it should have had despite being (in MY opinion) nearly as good as Sonero.

Lyric wise this track is, I guess, a bitter song about a man lamenting how his countryside woman who was supposed to love him left him to go to the city as soon as his Cane and Banana plantations dried out...

Basically, it's ANOTHER example and message of superficial and materialistic interest told in a "funny" way...

The tune also features a decent Piano solo by Héctor Pellot (Pacheco's 1960's Pianist) followed by an EVEN GREATER musical finale to the tune!...

7.Shalom Malecum, another of the BIG HITS (written by Cuban Composer/Percussionist Justi Barreto) is a song that talks about the importance and influence of the Jewish community in New York (concerning the good aspects...)

Musically speaking, it's another VERY NICE Cuban "Salsa" style of track with a very classic Piano Montúno pattern in the background, and Pacheco's NICE "Sonóra" style of horn arrangements!

8.Mi Nuevo Amór (written by Pacheco) is a Cha-Cha-Chá tune that I personally find AWESOME!

Even though the 1st part begins a bit "sweet" and romantic, the 2nd part gets turned into a WONDERFUL and INTENSE tune with a VERY CONCENTRATED Cha-Chá musicality and VERY SOULFUL vocals by "El Conde"!

DEFINITELY another of MY favourite tunes from the album despite not being one I've EVER heard ANYONE talk about before!...

Song.9 is a tune in the Afro-Puerto-Rican rhythm of Bomba.

It talks about Panchón, some bad and tough neighbourhood guy who is watching out with his big Machete for Juaniquón for wanting to be too brave...

Despite the cheesiness of the lyrical content, this is still a nice, fun and listenable little tune...

Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
