Tenor saxophone, French horn, drums, two string basses; a change of pace, indeed, brought off with adventurousness and aplomb by Johnny Griffin. By 1961, when he recorded Change of Pace, Griffin had built a reputation as one of the most formidable hard-bop tenors. His greased-lightning abilities with the saxophone were well known from his work with Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, and the group he co-led with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Less recognized was the breadth of knowledge and curiosity that led Griffin to this unusual project. The instrumentation allowed textures more common to modern classical chamber music than to jazz. The experience and inclination of the players guaranteed unfettered swing. All of the compositions but one are by Griffin or his colleagues. His "Why Not'" underlines his admiration for Stravinsky with a melody line alluding to "Petrouchka."

***

It's hard to believe that this amazing set has been deleted from the CD catalog; it's easily one of the most interesting and rewarding jazz albums I've come across in years. A unique instrumental lineup of tenor saxophone, French horn, two basses and drums; first-rate playing from all hands; and the tingling atmosphere which only a truly inspired date can evoke all make A CHANGE of PACE well worth the time of any serious jazz fan. Those familiar with Johnny Griffin from his more typically furious blowing sessions of the 1950s and '60s will be awestruck by the delicacy he displays here; and anyone as yet unfamiliar with the great tenorman could find no better place to start getting to know him. One can only hope that another edition of this very special album will see the light of day soon; in the meantime, anyone who can still manage to grab it is advised to do so.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/wear on all three seams

-        Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-         Back cover has a small tape residue (grayish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged packaging tape) (less than 1 square inch in size)

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.   (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker  (less than ¼ square inch in size) .
