The first solo album of the architect of the Mamas & Papas sound, John Phillips, was certainly one of the more heralded events at the dawn of the 1970s. Phillips, the primary songwriter and vocal arranger for all of the group's great records, however, was not exactly a great lead vocalist. Phillips knew this, and, according to his book, Papa John, he purposely buried his voice in the mix. This proved to be a bit of tragedy, because underneath it all, this is an excellent album. Songs such as "April Anne," "Malibu People," and "Holland Tunnel" bear out what a fine songwriter he really was, and indeed, these are some of the finest songs of his career. The performances on this record are spectacular. Backed by an all-star group of musicians (most of Elvis Presley's band, including James Burton, as well as the Wrecking Crew, among others), the record's decidedly country feel is crafted to the extreme. Mamas co-founder Denny Doherty has always felt that had the Mamas & Papas recorded this album, it would have been one of their finest. There's no doubt.

Sometimes an album comes out of nowhere and just steals your heart. You didn’t see it coming. You didn’t expect it. The crush starts off unassumingly enough. But then it grows. It creeps under you skin and forges with your muscles, with your tissues. Its just one of those albums that gets better with every single spin. The songs just seem so natural, like they’ve always been a part of you and you can’t imagine that album not always having been in your life. It has the feel and soul of a late 60s The Band or Dylan album while being Laurel Canyon at its core all the way. I’m convinced this is Father John Misty’s favorite album. I’m positive that in his teens he played it every single day, and just dreamed of being this Wolf King of LA. Ask him yourself, if you don’t believe me. I don’t need to.

It totally captures the spirit and fire of an old time saloon straight out of Deadwood. With a piano in the corner and beer & whiskey merrily going around. Everyone’s in great spirits and laughter and hearty conversation fill the air. You sit in your seat as the beers kick in feeling free & easy after a hard days work in the sun singing and dancing to yourself. Not a care in the world. Occasionally, the local drunk actually does get up to dance by the piano and everyone gives a knowing laugh, egging him on & inwardly hoping he will fall. You get the feeling that Rocky Raccoon is going to step through those saloon doors at any moment. And maybe, he just might.

Grade: A. This is a total lost classic, and easily one of the Laurel Canyon’s best albums from its heyday. It’s free & easy and completely natural and effortless. A good time, drinking album with a backing band (and backup singers) to die for. The slide guitar steals the show on quite a few numbers but the playing from all is impeccable. This must have been quite the project to put together, and it’s a bit of a shame it’s not more well known. It’s combination of country, folk and rock is really second to none. And it drunkenly staggers all the way to number three.

John Phillips was one of the unheralded heroes of the American Psychedelic Revolution. To our ears, this album remais one of the most wonderful, long-lost relics of the 1960's (although, technically, the album was released in 1970). After Mamas and Papas disintegrated, John Phillips relegated himself to a drug-induced oblivion, but not before recording this great West Coast/soft psych/trippy Folk album. This moody, brooding masterpiece is a testimony to his fantastic songwriter skills and mesmerizing vocal. The songs are - literally - one minor masterpiece after another, joys of utter simplicity and lack of adornment, and the musicians are the envy of Los Angeles. Practically the entire Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" orchestra is here, down to Darlene Love on backing vocals!!!. And that is not all. Three out of five of the best American pedal-steel guitar players appear on the list of musicians: James Burton (played with  Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons), Buddy Emmons (played for practically everyone) and OJ "Red" Rhodes (Mike Nesmith, Monkeys, etc). And then there are others: Hal Blaine, Drums - Larry Knechtel - Keyboards and many, many others. The final result is a gentle, but ominously trippy and with a dark underside album on which John's deep, expressive voice cascades over intricate musical patterns like a proverbial waterfall. The album was quickly withdrawn from commercial circulation upon release - whether because John was not happy with it, or because it did not sell -  and it was unavailable in any decent format for decades.The songs are: April Anne - Down the Beach - Drum - Holland Tunnel - Let it bleed, Genevieve - Malibu People - Mississippi - Someone's sleeping - The Mermaid (mistitled on some foreign releases) - Topanga. A must for any West Coast 60's music aficionado.

Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-         Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)
