The Diary Of A Band Volume Two

BOTH VOLUMES OF JOHN MAYALL'S "The Diary Of A Band" (RECORDED BY JOHN MAYALL BETWEEN OCTOBER AND DECEMBER 1967) OFFERED TOGETHER AS A NICE PAIR

AND BOTH ARE HOUSED IN THEIR ORIGINAL FRONT LAMINATED SLEEVES “Printed in England by Robert Stace” WITH THE STEREO/MONO INDICATOR HOLE ON THE BACK
COMPLETE WITH THE TWO ORIGINAL DECCA COMPANY INNER SLEEVES

TWO SUPERB LPS - RECORDED BY MAYALL ON A TWO TRACK REEL TO REEL - SO NOT AUDIOPHILE QUALITY BUT CAPTURING THE BAND AND THE LAID-BACK, SMOKEY ATMOSPHERE OF THE GIGS PERFECTLY - AND THEY BOTH SOUND GREAT

FIRST *STEREO* PRESS MATRICES:
VOLUME ONE: ZAL - 8168 - 1W / ZAL - 8169 - 1W
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/BK and 1/BC

VOLUME TWO: ZAL - 8170 - 1W / ZAL - 8171 - 1W
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/M and 1/A

This has been re-listed due to the previous winner never paying for the record (they are no longer a member of eBay)

This is the Mayall band of the Mick Taylor era, with one or two personnel changes between the tracks.
Mayall used to record all his gigs on a 2 track reel to reel tape recorder, so pretty lo-fi audio quality. However, the music more than makes up for the poor sound, with some long tracks which allow them to stretch out on fine solos, particularly from Mick Taylor and Dick Heckstall-Smith.
Taylor really impresses here, showing a maturity far beyond his years (he was 18 when most of it was recorded).
Much of the music here was never recorded in a studio, and Mayall had a habit of almost pulling songs out of a hat at gigs, so the chances are that 1 or 2 of these were only ever played just the once

VOLUME ONE:
Side One: Blood on the Night / Edmonton - Cooks Ferry Inn (Speech Only - Impromptu) / I Can't Quit You Baby (amusingly misspelled as "I Can Quit You Baby" on the label)
Side Two: Medley: Keef Hartley Interview - Anzio Annie - Keef Hartley Interview (cont:) into John Mayall Interview - Snowy Wood - John Mayall Interview (conclusion) - The Lesson / My Own Fault / God Save the Queen

VOLUME TWO:
Side One: Gimme Some Lovin' (Spoken Introduction) / The Train / Crying Shame
Side Two: Local Boy Makes Good (Speech Only - Impromptu) / Help Me / Blues in B Flat / Soul of a Short Fat Man

LABELS: CLEAN, BRIGHT and UNMARKED with moderate to heavy spindles - these two have been well played (especially Volume One) but have also been very well cared for as is evident from the practically unmarked surfaces
VINYL Visual: Both records retain their original DEEP, almost LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN and are practically unmarked
VINYL Audio: Both albums play extremely well throughout with NO scratches, sticks or jumps and only the occasional click/pop (nothing I found AT ALL intrusive on listening to these two WONDERFUL LPs). They are both cut pretty quietly but even when played at a LOUD volume there is very little unwanted surface noise (just some crackle at the beginning of Side 2 of Volume 2). Tremendously atmospheric pair of records - GREAT STUFF and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Graded VERY GOOD++ to EXCELLENT for audio
SLEEVES: Both sleeves are front laminated and retain their DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN with just a little 'ring'. The unlaminated backs have picked up some dirty marks over the years (please see photos) but both sleeves are good and solid with very little storage wear to the edges or spine - where all text is CLEAR and BOLD. Critically graded VERY GOOD++

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to a recent spate of bidders with no feedback not paying for records I must insist that all bidders with 0 feedback contact me first before bidding to confirm their genuine intention to buy the record otherwise their bid will be cancelled and they will be blocked. Sorry to sound so authoritarian but non payers are a real waste of not only my time but genuine eBayers
