John Martyn

'Solid Air'

Island, UK, 1973

ILPS 9226

HANDS DOWN John Martyn's greatest achivement. I remember seeing him perform 'May You Never' on the Old Grey Whistle Test at around the time of this albums release and I was so blown away that I went out the next day and bought a copy - this one in fact! Even my mates in the school playground with their Purple and Zeppelin albums were raving about him.

Martyn's sloughful, lanquid approach was the perfect antidote for the amped up attack of the mid seventies and this album holds center court as far as I'm concerned. Martyn's rough hewn voice penetrates jazz infused folk blues with the emphasis on intimacy and closeness singing songs about love and fear. He's a man that can tear your world apart and then build it back up again within the space of just one song. A great talent and a wikedly strong songwriter with a lasting quality comparable to Dylan, Waits, Buckley, Arthur Lee and Van Morrison.

Tough to find these as original pink rim pressings; most are the mid seventies solid blue label. Its even tougher to find copies with decent condition covers as the matt black finish is often badly worn and poorly handled. This one is superb.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Island, UK, 1973

Vinyl: Superb clean and shiny condition. Can barely see any spindle marks and practically no signs of use - can only have been played a handful of times at most. Grades as MINT-!

Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated matt black gatefold cover - retains full printers bloom and displays a crisp newness. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is straight, stiff and completely uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Grades as MINT-!

Inserts: None
