Double Fantasy is two albums, one very very good, one very very bad, stitched together like a musical Frankenstein. For those who grew up buying songs piecemeal on iTunes, you can't imagine how terrible it is to have an LP with a mix of wonderful and terrible songs, interspersed.
The wonderful songs are, of course, by John Lennon, in a comeback that includes some of the best solo songs he ever wrote, including (Just Like) Starting Over and Beautiful Boy. Lennon's songs are relaxed, confident, tuneful, and likable.
Then there's Yoko, a talented conceptual artist who is better known for being a terrible singer-songwriter who combined derivative melodies with trite lyrics and then sang them in weak and nasal tones.
This album apparently began when Lennon played a new song he'd written to Yoko (I'm Losing You) and she decided to write I'm Moving On in return, which was pretty much a rip-off of I'm Losing You.
Her best song, the fun I'm Your Angel, is also a rip off; she was sued by the owners of Makin' Whoopee. She was apparently warned beforehand that this might happen and went ahead and recorded it anyway. Her second best song, Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him, is a surprisingly tolerable New Wave number, and if she'd been held to two or three of her best pieces she actually wouldn't have caused that much damage to the album, even if her style didn't mesh with Lennon's.
Back in the days of vinyl, you would have to simply get up every three minutes and move the needle if you didn't want to suffer through Yoko's songs. And yeah, I did know a weird artsy girl who said she skipped over the Lennon songs to listen to the Yoko ones, but she also once defended purposely tedious art videos by saying that boredom was a worthy emotion to elicit from your audience, so I can't say her opinion meant much to me.
The sad thing is, Lennon had more songs, which were left unpolished and released posthumously on Milk and Honey (alongside - sigh - more Yoko). Had he worked on those songs and put them on Double Fantasy he could have had arguably the best album of his solo career. Now the best you can do is to buy the digital Lennon songs from his last two albums and make a playlist out of them, giving a very rough approximation of the album he would have released if he wasn't too much in love to realize what an untalented musician Yoko was.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY CHARLES HEROLD, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
John Lennon's final album, released just days before he was killed, included no less than four top-ten charting hits. Beloved piece of Beatles/Lennon history, presented here in the condition that can't be improved. Track listing: Just like starting over - Every man needs a woman (who loves him) - Cleanup time - Give me something - I'm losing you - Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) - Watching the wheels - I'm your angel - Dear Yoko - Beautiful Boys - Kiss kiss kiss - Woman - Hard times are over.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD:
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.
(b) The record is believed to come in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.
(c) The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
