JOHN JENKINS - JOHN JENKINS w/KENNY BURRELL

A very presentable and great sounding copy of this incredibly rare US Blue Note jazz gem

Year/Label : 1957 US BLUE NOTE
Label number : BLP 1573

Matrix numbers : BN-LP-1573 - A  / BN-LP-1573 - B   with "RVG" (stamped) and the "P" or ear on both sides
Nice thick, weighty and completely flat vinyl is in very good plus (VG+) condition, retaining a nice jet black sheen and only when viewed closely under a bright light do a few wispy hairlines and very light surface scuff marks come into view. The exception to this is a 4cm scuff mark located at the beginning of side 2 (see photo) which is a little more obvious and just visible in normal daylight when the record is tilted to the correct angle in a good light, but even this is non-feelable and there is certainly nothing here that is obviously below the surface and impinges upon the impressive sound quality. The all important Plastylite "P" (or "ear") symbol and "RVG" (Rudy Van Gelder) are clearly visible in the run-off grooves for each side of the record, confirming this to be a very first pressing.   Excellent (EX) condition labels each with the all important 1st press circular deep grooves and the "47 WEST 63rd NYC" circular texts. Each label has a few very faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole and the side 1 label has two small import stickers, which for me add even further authenticity to this treasured record. The side 2 label has a horizontal crinkle across it - clearly a manufacturing fault, not uncommon in 1950's early Blue Note 1st pressings. The iconic and original front-side only laminated outer sleeve is in good plus (G+) condition -  although the edges remain firm, two thirds of the top edge is split as is the whole of the spine edge. The bottom edge remains intact with 2cm of scuffing at each end. I do believe that the spine edge is repairable since the split is a very clean one, if that makes sense. The photos, text and art work on the front side remain vibrant and clear and although all of the text on the reverse side remains perfectly intact and legible there is some mild age discolouration and a ring of "grubbiness" towards the edges. There is also the remains of a London (143 Holloway Road) shop sticker located at the top left corner of the reverse side. Note the horizontal "47 West 63rd St., New York 23" text at the bottom of the reverse side - again indicative of very early Blue Note pressings. The quality of the MONO audio is very good plus (VG+), bordering on excellent. Lovely tone and excellent clarity throughout. There are no skips, jumps, repeats or jumps, just the occasional light background click - no rotational clicks or nasty "pops", and background crackle/interference is at an absolute minimum - just the hint of some very mild crackle during a couple of the quieter moments and the interludes, but even this is non-intrusive. It really is difficult to believe that this record is 67 years of age and listening to each track is like having John Jenkins and his supporting musicians in your living room...
With John Jenkins on alto sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Grant Green on guitar, Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums who could ask for more? Top notch musicians at the top of their game...no wonder this is such a sought after LP.
A truly iconic, jazz "all-time great" LP - some blemishes as detailed above, but still great sounding music and the rarity of this 1st pressing merits pride of place in any jazz vinyl collection. POSTAGE COSTS :

For the UK £6 using Royal Mail 1st class signed for (note that for items selling for more than £200 I post Royal Mail special delivery, for which I pay the extra cost);
