Arguably John Coltrane's finest all-around album [EVEN COMPARED TO BLUE TRAIN, GIANT STEPS OR LOVE SUPREME, SCOTT?!?!?  -- OP.ED.] , this recording has brilliant versions of "Afro Blue" and "I Want to Talk About You"; the second half of the latter features Coltrane on unaccompanied tenor tearing into the piece but never losing sight of the fact that it is a beautiful ballad. The remainder of this album ("Alabama," "The Promise," and "Your Lady") is almost at the same high level.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE LAMINATED COVER IS VERY NICE ON THE VISIBLE, OUTER SIDE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++) - BUT DOES HAVE SOME WATER STAINING AND MINOR STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS ON THE INSIDE OF THE GATEFOLD, WHICH ARE NOTED BELOW.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible water stain  (VISIBLE ONLY ON THE INSIDE OF THE GATEFOLD COVER)  affects the area about 1 inch wide along the bottom seam; there is some minor structural damage to the cover (affecting ONLY the paper slick, NOT the cardboard base); the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, a few microscopic  peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area (of these, only a slight warp is visible on the outer, visible side of the cover). The eroded part of the gatefold's inside was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape (about  1 x 12"), apparently in an effort to shore up the cover and prevent further decay. The tape is NOT visible on the outside.

-        Cover has some writing on the inside of the gatefold, along the bottom seam (VISIBLE ON THE INSIDE ONLY): time and cause of John Coltrane's death written in black ballpoint pen on the LEFT "leg" of the gatefold, about 1/4 x 10" in size) ; the name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen on the right "leg" of the gatefold, about 1/8 x 2 inches in size); small filing code written next to the name as well as on the back panel (this, latter, writing, may be possible to erase, as it is on the laminated surface).

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1. Inside gatefold has some light ring wear also

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging  (nothing significant); Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        Inside gatefold  has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        The cover emits a musty smell, apparently from some mold and mildew or prolonged exposure to the humidity. This can be reduced by keeping the cover in a dry, well-lit place over a period of time.

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the spine (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY) (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No stamps

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
