John Milton Cage Jr. (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer. A pioneer of chance music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde and, in the opinion of many, the most influential American composer of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage's romantic partner for most of their lives.

In 1958 Cage gave a lecture in Brussels called "Indeterminacy: New Aspect of Form in Instrumental and Electronic Music" (given again in 1959 at Teacher's College, Columbia). The lecture consisted of a number of short stories read by Cage in exactly one minute; because of this time limit the speed of Cage's delivery varied enormously. The second performance and a subsequent recording (Cage 1959) contained music, also by Cage, played by David Tudor at the same time.

One strand of indeterminacy in music sees it as an aesthetic endeavour that strives to dissolve any fixed properties of music sound into a fluid process and do away with the traditional control of the composer over the material. In its most radical form, all sounds have equal value: sounds chosen by the composer, by the performer, and all the unforeseen and unpredictable sounds that surround us every day. Indeterminacy in this view is philosophically opposed to aleatoric music: there the indeterminate element was kept under careful control by the composer, usually by offering the performers a limited number of possibilities to choose from.

This is the excellent and very scarce 1959 John Cage and David Tudor double box set album entitled " Indeterminacy: New Aspect of Form in Instrumental and electronic Music. " recorded on the Folkways record label No. FT 3704. This is an American pressed and produced album set.

This album Set is very carefully described as follows:

ALBUM 1. is graded as in very good condition + with light marks, and some very light scratches seen on the playing surface only. ( Seen under very strong light ).

ALBUM 2. is graded as in excellent condition with very light marks, and some very very light scratches seen on the playing surface only. ( Seen under very strong light ).

LABELS Are in excellent condition with no marks or stains seen.

( Side 1. are dark Blue labels). ( Side 2. are White labels ).

BOX COVER Is in excellent condition with no marks, but it does have some light age water spots on the edge of the front cover continuing onto the rear cover.

INSERTS Contains its original booklet, which is in excellent condition.

INNERS Contains plain paper inners. SPINE Is in excellent condition, (Water spots) with the title clearly seen. RECORD CONDITIONS NEAR MINT The very lightest of marks on the Playing surface. EXCELLENT Very light marks on the playing surface. VERY GOOD Light marks and some light scratches on the playing surface. GOOD ONLY Many light marks and many light scratches on the playing surface. 1. All records will be sent in a protective polythene record cover.
