There's always a surprise in store with Joe Jackson because the British artist's style and means of expression were and still are as changeable as the color of a chameleon. After venturing-into the regions of jump and jive, Jackson followed this up in 1982 with Night and Day, an album which soon took him to the top of the British charts. The programming title certainly holds what it promises for the numbers included on the LP are as varied as day and night.

Alongside technically perfect rock ballads one finds intensely rhythmic ethno numbers with an African or Latin-American origin. Some are pleasantly easygoing, while others such as Chinatown demand several hearings and real concentration on the part of the listener in order to take in the finely chiseled mix of Beat and Far-Eastern melodies. Of one thing, however, one can be sure: This release is tremendous fun.

Joe Jackson's debut single, ''Is She Really Going Out With Him?'', was not an immediate hit; however, by the time his debut album Look Sharp! was released, the song had reached charts in the U.K. and U.S., earning him a gold record. For the follow-up, he produced the top 5 hit ''It's Different For Girls'', Joe received the highest musical accolade of the Netherlands, the Edison Award.

After two edgy new wave pop records, his next tracks included some reggae influences such as the tracks ''One to One'' and ''Mad At You'', while ''Jumpin' Jive'' - recorded with jazz musicians - was full of old jump blues and swing tunes.

The huge commercial success came with his crafted pop songs ''Steppin' Out'' and jazzy ''Breaking Us In Two'' climbing the charts worldwide. Joe Jackson produced even jazzier hits in 1984 such as ''Happy Ending'', (a duet with Elaine Caswell), ''Be My Number Two'' and ''You Can't Get What You Want''.

The album Big World (1986), a live album of entirely new material including ''Home Town'', was recorded during six concerts. It is not a regular live album though, the audience was asked to be quiet during the songs and the applause was edited out.

The pop song ''Nineteen Forever'' was part of a larger construction from the album Blaze Of Glory, designed to tell a semi-autobiographical story. In 1991 Joe Jackson decided to abandon pop once and for all in favour of more serious music. It spawned the track ''Stranger Than Fiction''.

"I wanted something elemental because that's the kind of album I wanted to make," Jackson explains. "There is no padding on it at all; the album is stripped to the bare essentials, so I hope it has a timeless quality. The title seems to fit."

Joe Jackson is an english man, coming from Portsmouth. He began his musical career as a student at the 'Royal Academy of Music', with piano and composing as his main subjects. In order to gather experience and partly to help finance his studies, he played as a living Muzak supplier in a dance combo for teas or dinners in different establishments. As the rock music movement began in 1976/77 in England, Joe Jackson was also there. He formed a band called 'Arms and Legs', which didn't last long, but brought Jackson together with Graham Maby. Since then, Maby is Joe Jackson's most important partner.

In 1978, Joe Jackson came with a demo band and his own songs to a producer and a record contract. In a short time, the single 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' and the LP 'Look Sharp', were on the American pop charts. The Joe Jackson Band went on a world tour and made great impressions everywhere with their perfect appearances. No time was wasted on announcements, the music was more important. Whether with 2 minute numbers like 'One More Time', or 'Look Sharp', or with ballads like 'Is She Really Going Out With Him', or 'Fools in Love', Jackson offered compositions and lyrics with quality that is clearly above others.

He comes across more as a banker if he's not standing on-stage. Also, on-stage he often tries to give the impression of being off in the distance ("I don't need to applaud with the others, we have a drummer"). But, whoever hears him sing 'A Slow Song', realizes the passion beneath it all. Joe Jackson came to the concert from Japan and directly flew further on to Australia. His Roadies had jackets with the inscription: 'J.J.s Mammoth Tour. Ten Months. I am here voluntarily.'

It would take too long to tell the whole story about Joe Jackson here, who was born in Burton upon Trent in the county of Staffordshire on August 11th, 1954. That his music can hardly be categorized and that his records always make great stylistic jumps, goes along the same way that his life has. From the Royal Academy of Music, London (where he learned to play violin and piano), from a Bar Pianist in the Playboy Club up to his extended tours. But it is exactly at his live appearances where he is able to express his music very intensively.

Joe Jackson is an English musician and singer-songwriter who scored a major hit in 1979 with his first release "Is She Really Going Out With Him?".

Live 1980/86 is a double live LP which was recorded during the 1980 Beat Crazy tour, the 1982-83 Night and Day Tour, the 1984 Body and Soul tour and the 1986 Big World tour. These performances took place in Manchester, Utrecht, Sydney, Melbourne, Vancouver and Tokyo. During the four tours Jackson goes through different periods in his songwriter's career, each time using a new backing band. Live 1980/86 charted in the United Kingdom, USA, The Netherlands and Australia and contains the live acoustic and a cappella versions of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?", "It's Different For Girls", "Steppin' Out" and features new interpretations of classic hits from Joe Jackson's vast repertoire. 

The Live 1980/86 double album, originally released in 1988, celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2018 and the 180 gram records are housed in 2 printed inner sleeves.

Live Music is a document of the fantastic European tour from 2010. While 2003 s Volume 4 and the seven-month tour that followed that brilliant record featured the reunion of the entire original, iconic Joe Jackson Band from the late 70s, the follow-up, 2008 s Rain, was made with three of those four members: Jackson (vocals and keyboards), Graham Maby (bass/vocals) and Dave Houghton (drums/vocals). This is the band that appears on Live Music, which is made up of 12 tracks culled from board recordings from a variety of cities. Jackson will perform with The Roots as his band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on June 8. 

Jackson approaches the live setting with a very different mindset than he does his studio recordings. For that reason, his tours are always must-see events as the songs take new shape and evolve over time. His writing leaves much room for re-interpretation and he derives great pleasure from bursting the boundaries and exploring new avenues and readings of his own work. The 2008/09 tours were no different, as it featured a piano-based trio without guitar. Jackson always enjoys the energy that an audience brings to the creative process and he often likes to authenticate the experience by releasing a live record as a historical document of his ideas. Live Music will be the sixth live record in his career. His first was the groundbreaking Big World in 1986, which was all new songs recorded in front of an audience. The second was Live 1980 1986, which was a double album featuring songs from every phase of his career up to that point. The third was 2000 s Summer in the City: Live in New York, which was also a trio record, though that one featured more recent alum Gary Burke on drums. Next was 2001 s Two Rainy Nights, released after the Night and Day II tour, and the most recent was 2004 s Afterlife, which documented the Volume 4 performances. Live Music features nine Jackson classics and three covers: The Beatles Girl, David Bowie s Scary Monsters and Ian Dury s Inbetweenies. The tracks are heard as they were performed. There aren t any fixes, overdubs or corrections.

Joe Jackson is one of our most amazing and most underrated musicians. With classical training, a product of the punk era of 70s, his music has explored various genres like jazz & reggae and keeps his audience guessing. This live set crackles, sparking the speakers. "Chinatown" recorded for his 1982 album NIGHT & DAY sizzles, at times sounding like something from the Middle-East, with Jackson's piano raw and riveting. Jackson's cover of the Beatles' "Rubber Soul" classic track "Girl" is a gem. I feel the emotional ache in Jackson's vocal while his piano clops through the melody almost as a taunt, "She's the kind of girl who puts you down when friends are there; You feel a fool." Ian Dury's "Inbetweenies" sasses and coaxes, "Shake your booty when your back is bent; Put your feelings where my mouth just went." The band sticks a bomb into the arrangement of "Got the Time" with Dave Houghton's drums insanely throbbing. The set concludes with the powerful "A Slow Song," "Pick me up & undress me; Lay me down & caress me." "Live Music Europe 2010" is a delicious recording from one of our master musicians. Bravo!
