JOAN LA BARBARA

VOICE IS THE ORIGINAL INSTRUMENT LP

Wizard Records

Debut record from experimental vocalist & composer Joan La Barbara back from 1976 performed at the University Art Museum, Berkeley, California.

Some info on the release:  Released on Wizard Records, Usa. Rare lp with 3 works performed by La Barbara combining wild experimental vocals. All of the sounds on this record are created by my natural voice, layered to create different textures. No electronic manipulation was involved in the making of this group of pieces. Close to the vocal experimentations of Henri Chopin, Demetrio Stratos, Meredith Monk, Diamanda Galas & Bernard Heidsieck.

"The sounds are presented here in their raw state; it is truly an experimental work with no intentional musical implications or designs. "Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation" explores the color spectrum of a single pitch. "Circular Song" was inspired by the circular breathing technique of horn players. " In much of my early work I dealt with sound as a physical presence, sculpting it, building up layers in complex constructions, letting the flow of thought and the visualization of sonic gestures direct my studio art. Voice Is the Original Instrument was both a statement of purpose and a manifesto as, through various experiments and explorations, I tried to rediscover the basic function of the voice as the first means of expression as well as to release untapped sonic material. As I gave my classically trained voice its freedom, letting it direct me toward new places and ideas, I developed what was a unique vocabulary and used those sounds to score an orchestra of layered voices."

Experimental composer & vocalist Joan La Barbara’s work is concerned with extending the sound spectrum associated with the vocal instrument, exploring its vast & relatively unexplored possibilities both alone and in combination with other instruments. This is her FIRST LP recording. The compositions are “Circular Song” based on circular breathing, “Voice Piece: One-Note Internal” which explores the color spectrum on one pitch & “Vocal Extensions” based on stretching the voice. Very scarce recording & seldom offered on eBay!

La Barbara is an experimental vocalist who studied under Helen Boatwright and is married to Morton Subotnick; she has worked with David Tudor, Phill Niblock, Robert Ashley, John Cage, Steve Reich, Jim Hall, Don Sebesky, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Merce Cunningham, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Kenneth Goldsmith, Judy Chicago, Lita Albuquerque, and James Tenney, and provided vocal sound effects for the Alien movies.
