Label/Format: Track – matt, smooth format (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: All four very fresh, clean and attractive with spindle marks ranging from few to less than moderate. Matt black labels are more revealing than most so they do show a little and more so under angled light. But in terms of this very popular record – this one dating back to around March 1970 (as seen on the inner sleeve date codes), these marks are less than average. But far more important are the beautiful clean and shiny playing surfaces and the immaculate sound quality they offer. I am as certain as I can ever be, these records have only been lightly played, and then with utmost care on a quality system. A pure fact is, some owners used the labels a little more than others to locate spindle to hole and I am sure these do not reflect the actual number of plays. This is the best ‘Track’ ‘Electric Ladyland’ I have seen for some time and up there with my best ever.

Cat Number: 613008/9 (set number 2657-001) with the cover including the rare small set number sticker inside near the bottom edge (viewed veritically as seen in my pictures).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 137 / 142 grams. These more typical Track weights, most Polydor pressings that came a little later were usually much thinner and lighter.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Initially issued with blue writing inside the cover, these are very rare and even more so in decent condition. Replaced very quickly with the white writing inside. Finding any Track copy in anything like top conditions is fast becoming difficult as this legendary artist’s popularity and collectability continues to soar. Only available on Track before being repressed on Polydor for a relatively short time and most who bought it played it into submission on often very crude and basic record players. This hugely complex album is so easily damaged by heavy tracking vintage equipment – indeed many subjected to mono record players that tracked at 10 to 15 grams, no small wonder many were showing signs of wear after just a few plays. One arm drop or jolt, and there’s another copy written off with a deep scratch, crator, jump or stick – all the perils faced by records of the era, and remember, this legendary album was not even released in mono – that for many, a surprising fact even for 1968. Also, that beautiful ‘ladies’ cover rarely wears well either. Although laminated, this often badly dulled, peeled, lifted and creased. Finding a fresh example with few of those visual imperfections is immensely difficult and it really is SO frustrating when one like this comes along, I cannot even show it on Ebay due to it’s almost paranoid rules on showing nudity. This cover was never banned in the UK so why cannot I show it? – this will erk all sellers – or at least those who stick to the rules – and many fail to do so still. Anyway, the outside ‘offending’ artwork will be described fully further down, and this is one that looks terrific and do not underestimate just how difficult this album on Track is to find like this now.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The words ‘classic’ and ‘masterpiece’ are two phrases that are often overused, maybe by myself sometimes as I feely admit, but I do not hesitate in using them for this one. A legendary album by the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. Quite surprisingly, it failed top the album charts, peaking at No 6. This was the last proper album with the name Experience following Experienced and Axis. A stunning double set that features some amazing tracks including the long and short versions of ‘Voodoo Chile’, Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and the best for me is the long and quite sublime ‘1983’ which flows into ‘Moon, turn the tides...Gently, gently Away’, gentle and stunning pieces. This album was so ahead of its time, the recording is magnificent and the cover is as beautiful as the music, almost certainly one of the most famous sleeves in rock history - this UK version cover was not issued in the US. Such a shame the rules do not allow this gorgeous cover to be shown in full, but look at the stunning centrefold picture of Hendrix, the rest is of similar quality. The inner picture is pure class and must rank as one of the greatest ever pictures in rock history. A simply amazing picture of Jimi in full colour with that green smoky haze rising around him - little sums up this fantastic era in music better than this. As stated above this copy is exceptional with two records that play very close to perfection and the cover hugely impressive. Although laminated, this does not age well unless well cared for. Creases came easily and with the dark finish they ruin the appearance somewhat as does any major laminate dulling which few seem to avoid. Both records are lovely and look fantastic. I doubt if the cover and records have seen light of day for years and it has been cover protected for most of it’s existence – this makes a massive difference in the avoidance of friction rubs and dulling. A near prime Track example that even includes the date-coded Polydor-style inner sleeves. For fans and collectors needing a superb Track copy that offers nigh-on perfect sound with very little unwanted at all, this could be just the one you have been waiting for. So good in fact, it is proving hard to even offer it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a fully laminated gatefold format with the famous ‘Ladies’ cover that was not issued in the United States. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. This includes March 1970 inner sleeves and the inside gatefold still has the rare Set Number 2657 001 sticker.

Laminate – Front & Back: Again, it is with deep frustration I cannot show this beautiful, classic cover, one of the most famous within the history of rock. Yes, I can understand to some degree, not allowing the Blind Faith ‘girl’ cover, but not allowing this is to my mind, is pure crazy – so many choose to ignore the rules anyway – but rules are rules – however ridiculous, and I will not break them. The laminate on both sides retains a superb shine, freshness and clarity with any rim impression very light and faint with only the merest trace of dulling on the back seen under angled light – few will ever show less with thicker pressed Track records inside. Just one tiny lift trace on the back near the top of the spine and this hardly even shows with normal viewing. So few of these will retain such a lovely shine and the famous artwork looks truly fantastic with real depth of colour and detail. The front has three light half moons with any other fine surface creasing ultra fine on the edges with no penetrating cracking. Again that is seldom avoided. The back has one small half moon and just one other fine surface crease away from the edges. The unprotected narrow strips on the ends where the laminate ends short, are clean and unchipped with no grime or damage. Being honest, I have rarely, if ever seen a ‘Ladyland’ Track cover with fewer blemishes than this, the protective cover has done a splendid job for over 40 years keeping this classic artwork safe and it will take an extraordinary example to better it, I am highly confident few will be disappointed with this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Stunning in all respects, close to looking new and just look at that stunning artwork. The laminate is close to mirror-like and even the foldline hinge has ALL its laminate intact, strong and TOTALLY uncracked. How unusual is that? Hence, when opened, it still has that lovely crackle and creak, so it cannot be fully opened or the hinge laminate would break. So I gently propped open the centrefold for my pictures. Most these days flop open fully with no resistance left and the laminate cracked, peeled and broken. Not this one, it still have a fine ‘spring’ and freshness. The small white Set Number sticker is pristine, never removed or picked at, this little detail is seldom seen these days either.

Top & Bottom Edges: All pristine and fully laminated with no scuffing at all, both ultra smooth to the fingertip. Incredibly, these edges still retain an impressive shine as well. Being cover protected, these have suffered no friction rubs or abrasions.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with few traces of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Viewed very critically end-on, slightly thickened with a little gentle burring but totally unsoftened or feathered. Records entered on these edges that are exceptional compared to most seen. Beware of covers with no unlaminated strips on the ends, these on such covers were always present.

Spine and Text: Simply stunning condition: solid and thicker than some I have seen, straight, uncompressed and folded almost perfectly square, so the edges meet up almost perfectly together and nigh-on parallel. No text was printed on this one but the design follows around and all is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked or peeled laminate. A vital factor as one of the girl’s faces is seen in the centre of the spine, a crucial factor for those wanting the ‘perfect’ cover artwork. Few will survive in such remarkable condition. Just a very fine natural crease that has not recessed to any degree, try finding one much better. Just a couple of full openings of the cover will break and crack the laminate causing it to peel and flake, most will have this. Finding the crucial spine in this condition is little short of remarkable, that is no understatement.

Corners: All again in remarkable condition with any tip rubbing tiny and light. All retain impresisve neat shape and pointed definition and there are NO tip-ins and that is guaranteed.

Cover Summary: One of the most famous covers of all time, this does it near full justice – just wish I could show the main outer surfaces to prove the point. With so few blemishes and NO damage, this beautiful item should please most collectors – the finest Track example I have seen for a number of years. Poldor ones are far more common but lack the charisma, history and authenticity that only the Track Ernest J. Day covers offer. Just think, this one was actually in the shops when the great man was still alive.

The Inner Sleeves: Both EXCELLENT: the Polydor polylined inners are included and both in super condition with only gentle ageing, that in an attractive kind of way. The usual darkening to the seam adhesive gives them that more vintage look that many collectors actually appreciate. A lot of collectors like that mildly aged feel and appearance rather than snowy white ones. These very close to a matching pair with 1/0370 (1st March 1970) date codes as seen in close-up. The window circles crisp, neat and undamaged and minimal creasing. All the edges unsplit with no repairs. All reitterates a slightly later Track pressing which matches up to the labels of this copy. It seems to me a little churlish to show pictures of inner sleeves when I would rather be showing lovely pictures of the front and back main cover that have far more to offer in the wow-factor department.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to EXCELLENT(++): and a very impressive visual pair that are very clean with a beautiful shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A pair going more on the evidence of the playing surfaces and superb clean sound offered, only lightly played by a generally careful and mariculous one-owner. One who cared and stored the album inside a heavy-duty protective sleeve. This has NEVER been abused on mono record players, loaned out or ruined by inferior equipment, all reitterated by fantastic clean sound. Any surface marks are ultra fine, few and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. There are NO penetrating scratches on these two hugely impressive records – the surfaces of which on this album, I rarely, if ever seen better – or certainly not so for some considerable time. Visually super records that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play with superb audio quality and this too on one of the world’s most revealing turntables. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. No pops or significant clicks and a superb Track pressing that is practically devoid of surface sounds – what a joy to hear this legendary album with no hidden nasties in pristine clean unworn grooves. The odd sporadic tick on the ultra quiet passage nigh-on impossible to avoid, and just a couple noted, but try finding a much clean looking and sounding, available example of this monumental double set. Being a copy from early 1970, this had a better chance of avoiding the ‘Dansette-era’, and without any doubt, has never been subjected to any heavy tracking or worn stulus abuse that so many were. One of rock’s of most indispensable classics and heard here to practically maximum advantage. Both channels are clean, unstressed and fully focused. Even those ultra quiet passages on the long version of ‘Voodoo Chile’ and several areas of side C play cleanly with hardly anything unwanted. I am certain these records have been played only lightly and the slightly more spindle marks do not tell the real truth here. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this gem. CD copies I have heard are disappointing in comparison, they simply lack the detail, dynamics and historic feel for this one, and the packaging is a joke in comparison too, do the CDs versions even include the original UK cover? This is the real thing, it was produced and directed by Hendrix and it’s how the great man wanted it to sound - don’t mess with perfection. If your collection is missing this album, don’t hesitate, this copy will prove very difficult to find better for looks and sound, unless items have to be as per ‘brand new’ (and how many ever truly will be?), this beautiful Track album merits my highest recommendation.

End Piece: A legendary issue, this is a premier league album and artist. A copy that can be played and enjoyed to the absolute maximum - this will last indefintely if played on a modern quality deck and treated with the respect it deserves. Devoid of that dreaded distortion, scratches and groove wear, this will please most-all vinyl lovers, it is unlikely to need upgrading. Any Track copy in this condition is very special and the brilliant packaging and music aside (but always the most important factors), these are better than money in the bank, and this one really is investment quality. Again, apologies for not being able to show the beautiful cover in it’s full glory.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
