Artist or Band: THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Album Title: Axis Bold as Love.

Producer(s): Chas Chandler.

Engineer(s): Eddie Kramer.

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: EXP; Up From the Skies; Spanish Castle Magic; Wait Until Tomorrow; Ain’t No Telling; Little Wing; If Six Was Nine.

Side 2: You’ve Got Me Floating; Castles Made of Sand; She’s So Fine; One Rainy Wish; Little Miss Lover; Bold as Love.

Label/Format: Track – Intense black with silver ink, smooth finish, but do look slightly textured to the eye.

Label Conditions: Both labels are very clean and still fresh looking, spindle marks are moderate and largely confined to within the inner deep ring ridge and have removed no ink, these are fine and only show under angled light. Even the hole rims have remained unchipped or whitened. There is no chipping to the labels surface at all and for a vintage, popular mono record, have remained in very impressive conditions.

Cat Number: 612 003.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 158 grams. A very impressive weight for this record, not quite the 171 grams of the incredible stereo issue I sold a couple of weeks ago, but any record approaching the 160 gram level is way above average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity & Overview: Rare: and these days getting very rare indeed especially with the insert (and this insert is in super condition). The mono version is arguably a little easier to find than the stereo, but not so in better conditions. The ‘Summer of Love’ was still very much the era for the mono record and outsold the stereo version. Very early pressings are often trashed beyond use, although this one has been played a number of times, I would suggest mostly carefully as it has few marks and plays generally with impressive clean sound with NO distortion and devoid of pops or clicks. It does have a little very gentle surface sound, this too being played on a highly critical turntable and system for which this mono record was not really designed. Just enough to remind you are listening to a 44-year-old mono record. This one even amazed me and my play-grade was still very enjoyable. The rare insert sheet is in superb condition as well, although not really a poster, a lot of owners did actually wall mount it – this has not been. Printing quality on this insert also varies considerably. The deep red text matter is often printed paler and fuzzy and becomes very difficult to read. Although this one is very clear and sharp, the slightly paler text is not quite so easy to read against the intense orange backdrop. If tilted at a slight angle, the text then becomes far easier to read. Or course, this insert is guaranteed original, NOT a repro and has surived the years well, just one minor and very light corner crease. Even the back is untoned and fresh looking and the front totally unfaded with no other creasing or grubbiness (more on this further down). Lastly, for now, the cover, seldom seen devoid of major laminate, creasing or chipping issues. This one has also survived the years very well indeed with little to fault and really does look highly impressive. A cover made the same for mono and stereo. An unusual and impressive example in many ways, not perfect as it has been played several times with some gentle surface sound in places, but so hard to find complete, it will please many fans and collectors for sure (but not quite the audiophile or sound purist).

Original Year of Release: 1967

Matrix Nos: 612003 A 1 1 1 4 / 612003 B 1 1 2

Musicians: Jimi Hendrix – guitar, vocals, bass, piano, flute, voice on ‘EXP’; Mitch Mitchell – drums, glockenspiel, backing vocals, interviewer on ‘EXP’; Noel Redding – bass, 8 string bass, backing vocals, foot stamping, some lead vocals.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a clean mono copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. Clean, little-marked mono are especially hard to trackdown. Yes, this copy has been played a few times but the playing surfaces are still impressively clean and attractive with very few and light – and none sounding. The original owner with all evidence considered, played this carefully and the record has suffered no drops or jolts, tracking is effortless and the sound it totally distortion-free. Some gentle surface sound, mostly on side one, but not enough to detract from the marvellous music. An album as important as most in that great year of 1967 - the ‘Summer of Love’ - just think this record was actually purchased while the great man was still alive - this makes a record like this indispensable. The mono mix presents the music differently – if I had to choose, I still prefer the stereo, but most 60s connoisseurs would argue the case the other way for the mono version – it was the format of the era of course. The inclusion of the original poster/lyric insert which only came with the very early copies is a massive bonus too, especially seen swo clean, undamaged and unworn. The actual presentation of the music via vinyl for this vintage recording will never be beaten, this is the real thing, no remixing, remastering no tampering, it was produced by Chas Chandler and this is how he wanted it to sound - why fool around with perfection? Even with a little gentle surface sound (being played on ruthlessly revealing stereo equipment), this is an impressive set, the lack of distortion to the actual music and vocals is hugely important as most mono records were purchased to be played on the appropriate equipment of the day. This sound and mix on this vintage Track copy is definitive, sit back and enjoy it and listen in awe of the master genius that was Jimi Hendrix.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. This ends inside the spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. No was text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover.

Lamination – Front & Back: The excellent grading can be considered quite harsh, the only reason it has no plus added is due to thickening to the entrance edge on the back. There is very little wear elsewhere and will never even contemplate trimming edges to make them appear like new. I revile such practices and it is so obvious when this has happened. If I buy any record and suspect any malpractice to any part of the set, I will clearly mention it on my listing. Both sides are very impressive and highly attractive. The aforementioned edge has some moderately light burring but this is the only wear of any real note on the entire cover. With the laminate both sides retaining fine shine, freshness and clarity, this is a very eye-pleasing cover. A wonderful graphic that is seen to near maximum advantage with the laminate fully adhered with minimal traces of any creasing, friction rubs or dulling. Even under light, any surface marks are ultra fine and faint and just one small chip on the front bottom edge – a cover highly prone to chips and laminate peeling, this one retains nigh-on full coverage. So for looks and lack of wear to the main surfaces, this is very impressive sleeve that many collectors will enjoy.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A very impressive centrefold, the man’s picture has an eerie menace and adds a real sense of presence to this classic cover. Light handling traces to the matt dark surfaces, avoid this is near impossible, here only very light and few. The entrance edge has light burring, but barely any other traces of wear at all.

Top Edges: A couple of tiny surface chips, but impresisvely straight with little else to fault with full laminate retained that is very smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edges: One bigger chip and a couple of tiny ones, little else to fault up to the tips that have rubbed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and has barely any wear at all and has remained crisp and very neat. The back entrance edge has thickened but any feathering is neglible to none. There is some mildish burring/chipping to the extreme edge of the back with one tiny nick. As stated, I refuse to trim covers to enhance these edges, that is why I emphasise ‘no trimming’ on my listings, if I suspect this has happened, I will always mention it. If this practice is done, it is more than obvious to any serious collector.

Spine and Text: The spine is a crucial and critical area of this cover and very rarely does it escape laminate peeling, chipping and damage. This one is still very solid, straight with barely any compression. Folded square with no wear at all up to the corners that have chipped and rubbed. One of the best spines I have seen on this cover infact, it retains fully laminate cover with no peeling and even this is still smooth and unscuffed. Absolutely critical as the artwork flows around, so NO damage at all here and even the folds are solid and unchipped.

Corners: All show some wear, mostly on or near the tips, nothing excessive or heavy, few examples of this cover will escape this as a bare minimum.

Cover Summary: A lovely item, some blemishes or minor wear traces, yes, but nothing really serious and this will better probably the majority offered. This vintage cover is way above average and importantly, still looks very attractive. Arguably undergraded, but the entrance edge has thickened simply by removing and replacing the record. I feel sure it will please many, if not most collectors.

The Insert Poster: EXCELLENT: firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around offered as the real thing - Beware!, but this item will never be easy to fake and get away with. Magenta text on a very deep orange background, but printing quality really does vary. This one has sharp text, but the colour is a little pale but in full register. So not quite as easy to read as my previous example, but when tilted slightly, it becomes very easy. It is a notorious fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example HAS NOT been mounted, meaning there are no pin-holes, Blue-Tak or cellotape marks, it’s quite unusual to see the corners looking this neat and undamaged, just one light corner crease and a semi-crease on the corner when folded on the central fold. The back shows no marks at all and is still a lovely real white, not darkened or toned. The front retains amazing deep rich colour and shows few marks at all. The original fold-line is as solid as when made, unweakened or ‘stressed’ and shows no splits or tears. Some mild crinkle that few will ever avoid unless unhandled (not too likely for sure). Do not underestimate how difficult this is to find like this.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: in terms of real wear, barely any but this has darkened with age which in it’s own way, adds a good sense of age to this 1967 album. A plain ‘white’, polylined inner with two very neat and superbly crisp undamaged window circles and still clear lining. This has a little crinkle but remains very solidly intact. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. On pure looks alone, this is a very impressive vintage mono record with any surface marks few, light and faint. As stated above, the spindle marks evidence suggests several plays, but without a shadow-of-doubt, the original owner played this incredibly carefully, and likely on a mono record player. Clearly that makes the potential for scratching and arm placement critical, but this has NO penetrating scratches, arm drops or jolt evidence at all. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fine record plays around or up to it’s visual grading with just enough to remind of what it actually is. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. With several very careful plays on the clock, this has a little very gentle surface sound on side one, even less on side two. All the sound is fully focused, precise and clear, that is hugely important factor. My sensitive Linn/Naim combination take few prisoners and this mono record was not really ever designed to be played on such clinically revealing equipment. But this quality and tough record gave a very impressive account of itself. The sheer quality of the music wins the day, any minor surface sound was brushed aside and I enjoyed this immensely. No pops or clicks were noted and that in-itself is unusual on a record like this. Most seen battered and bruised, and totally unlistenable – this is nothing like that – if indeed it was, believe me, it would not be offered. As stated already, just enough to remind what you are listening too – several have told me they like this effect, it even adds to the pleasure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played several times, but carefully and that makes the difference. Well stored and carefully handled and for sure, cherished. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful early-pressed mono record. This copy will still prove quite difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. Not for the sound purist, if any little gentle surface sound is no acceptable, do not bid.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:

Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Rondo Red moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired with QED Silver terminated cable). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. Pictures taken with a Nikon D5000 SLR Digital Camera.

First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or prompt payment is a problem, please do not bid.

PACKING - THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.

What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing.

I now offer the fastest possible posting, often the very next day after payment is received or within two to three days maximum (unless on holiday). I only use FIRST-CLASS Mail. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and the cost of this lavish packing is NOT even charged for, I offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible for ultimate confidence. The boxes and ultra thick double-wall stiffeners and bubble wrap make a near impregnable fortress for safe shipping and this is used inland and overseas for ALL my records, not just the rare and expensive. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than one in two thousand based on over 7,000+ items sold in nearly 10 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. The only damage rate acceptable for this seller is ZERO and I think my packets will offer just that. It would take a vicious postman or postal service to damage these for sure. Even one of these stiffeners cannot be bent by hand, so what chance 3 or 4 inside a box? Oneadayrecords is a MAILER-FREE ZONE. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FIVE records per box (one double can sometimes be included subject to total weight). I will not respond to questions on shipping costs as all the details are included here and on ALL of my adverts. Details below:

NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS.

PLEASE NOTE: I now exercise my right to open a dispute after the Ebay rule of FOUR days if no payment is received. I will then cancel the dispute to end the, again after the mandatory FOUR days and then offer the item to the runner-up or relist. The non-payer will also be blocked from my Ebay site and they take the Ebay consequences (a strike or removal from the system). Small businesses need prompt payment to trade and these strict rules WILL be applied. If you cannot pay, DO NOT BID.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
