JFA(JodieFoster'sArmy)is a hardcorepunkband formed in 1981, with roots in Arizonaand in SouthernCaliforniaskateboardculture. The original members include Brian Brannon (vocals), DonRedondo (guitar), Michael Cornelius (bass), and Mike "Bam-Bam"Sversvold (drums). AlanBishopof SunCity Girlsalso played bass for a while. The band was pivotal in the developmentof the skatepunkand Skate Rock scenes. Over the years, the lineup has included manybass players and drummers but the core of Brannon and Redondo hasremained constant.
JFAwas formed around March 1981. Pendleton, then in the band The Deezand Cornelius, then in the band Jr. Chemists, knew each other fromshows around Phoenix,Arizonaand from skateboarding. They began playing together after a D.O.A.concert during the band's Hardcore81tour. Bam-Bam later joined after meeting Pendleton at an "IndustrialDance" in Phoenix. Brian Brannon was pulled into the band byCornelius who met him skateboarding and at punk shows. The band'sname is a reference to JohnHinckley, Jr.'s,attemptedassassinationof RonaldReagan.Jodie Foster's Army was a song before the band took the title astheir name, before that they had been calling themselves the"BREAKERS".
Theband's first show was opening for BlackFlagat an Industrial Dance which was one of a series of early Phoenixpunk shows. Their first song of the night was Pipetruck.
PlaceboRecords released their debut EP "Blatant Localism" in late1981. The band toured the west extensively and played many localshows. Their first national tour was in the summer of 1983 followingthe release of their first album "Valley of the Yakes".
Theoriginal bassist, Michael Cornelius, left the band in the summer of1984 prior to the nine-week summer '84 tour. Alan Bishop oflabelmates Sun City Girls played bass until Cornelius returned forthe 1986 release NowhereBlossoms.
BrianBrannon also currently serves as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in theUnited States Navy Reserve.
Theband received continuing coverage in the influential skateboardmagazine Thrasherduring the 1980s. Brannon eventually worked on the editorial stafffull-time and Pendelton and Cornelius were contributors of articlesand photographs.
Vinyl grading is usually based on the Goldmine standard and is as follows:
“SS” Still Sealed – For the collector that demands nothing but perfection.
“M” Mint - a near perfect, or unplayed record.
“NM” Near Mint - in factory fresh condition, like new.
EX+ - close to like new with only superficial signs of use that don't affect play. Will satisfy all but the most vain and demanding collector.
EX - a used, reasonable copy. Shows slight signs of wear.
VG+ - There will be obvious signs of wear and the possibility a few skuffs and/or light surface noise between tracks or during quiet passages, but still quite nice.
VG - significant wear and marks and usually quite noticeable surface noise,still plays great.
Good - In the record world, "Good" is not good! From here on down, we're talking about beat-up records!
