Description
Lot of six 78 rpm homemade records made in the early 1940s, each marked SHANGRI-LA RECORDS FROM WALT DAUGHERTY, each with sleeve also so marked, at least two with contributions vocally by a very young RAY BRADBURY. Daugherty (1916-2007) was a legendary figure in science fiction, and deeply involved with the early Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS). His fanzine was called Shangri-La and therein lies the origin of the name of these RARE albums (which I suppose could easily be the only ones in existence!). These were self-made in the very early 1940s and are in very fragile condition but most are still quite listenable, all are two sided discs. The records, their conditions, and contents, are as follows:
RECORD 1: metal disc with green laminate, slight edge chipping, more severe on side 2 where it slightly eats into the groove area. This is possible the most important disc as it contains RAY BRADBURY reading his poem "October" (a poem which I can find no other trace of!). Record also contains a discussion of World War II fandom and patriotism.
RECORD 2: metal disc with green laminate, slight edge chipping not entering into groove area. Appears to be Daugherty speaking only.
RECORD 3: solid black disc (not laminate), slight surface wear but in decent shape. This record has Daugherty, BRADBURY, and FORREST J ACKERMAN clowning around! "Are you Dracula?" is one deathless line!
RECORD 4: metal disc with green laminate, slight edge chipping not entering into groove area on one side but the other side with large region where the laminate is detaching - I did NOT listen to this side as the needle would likely destroy the laminate. The good side seems to have a KING KONG parody on it!
RECORD 5: metal disc with green laminate, slight edge chipping slightly entering into groove area on one side but the other side is essentially ruined with laminate pieces missing and rest coming loose - I did not listen to this side either!
RECORD 6: metal disc with green laminate, slight edge chipping not entering into groove area. This record also has RAY BRADBURY speaking on it!
From the estate of my dear friend Jerry Weist (1949-2011)
I am proud to be able to help out Jerry's family by selling part of his massive collection over the next few months (OK, that's not true. It will be over the next few years! There is SO much wonderful stuff). Those of you familiar with Jerry know that condition was very important to him, as was having SIGNED books, so look for lots of high grade material in my auctions for the forseeable future.
Look for the 3rd edition of his Comic Art Price guide, out now.
