Brief Info: The first issues of this UK version varied considerably from the US version - which for a huge fan (myself) of this band has always been a bone of contention. ‘Takes Off’, the debut album was not issued here until later and RCA decided to drop songs and instead replace them with cuts from ‘Takes Off’. It made little sense to me then and still doesn’t. Of course, for fans, it’s a great album to have in the collection but is not really a real copy of ‘Surrealistic Pillow’, but more a compilation of the first two albums. For me the greatest single of all time ‘White Rabbit’ was not included, probably due to the obvious drug references and it was not even allowed airplay at the time. We now have two female singers in Signe Toly Anderson and Grace Slick, Anderson did not feature on this album so the whole package is somewhat misleading. Still I cannot resist offering this rare mono original which is so rarely seen in hardly played conditions. My advice to any serious fans of this wonderful band, is to get a US original AND the UK version. The real ‘Surrealistic Pillow’ is one of my all-time favourite albums, arguably one of the greatest psychedelic folk albums ever issued. This UK version is good, but simply different, an interesting listen simply because of that. Of course I cannot change the bizarre decision of RCA to alter this album at the time, but finding one so clean and offering near perfect mono sound is something that must not be taken lightly, the first I have seen or heard for ages.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: simply because it was made with typically thin card and it’s highly intolerant of heavy handedness and bad storage.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with Clarifoil laminate on the front. This covers all folds and ends on the back via the spine. It was printed and made in England by Clout & Baker.

Cover Front: Firstly, I have to reitterate just how thin this card is, little thicker than quality paper and finding this ultra fragile cover in such fine condition is a considerable achievement. This superb front has little to fault and lack the usual laminate issues that blights this and others like it. Although an RCA record, this has all the hallmarks of a true Decca issue – indeed the record is Decca manufactured and the cover is very similar in construction to the early Rolling Stones titles on the same label. Secondly, this is a true dedicated mono cover – beware of substitutions. Clarifoil so often has adhesion problems, many are seen with huge blisters or significant lifts, even cracked or peeled. This has little to fault and ALL is fully adhered with any creasing, few and any present very light indeed. Retaining a superb shine and clarity, even freshness, the famous artwork will seldom be seen better on a UK original. Only under angled light are a few faint friction rubs seen but this lovely cover front has aged little and of course, it is somewhat unique with it’s strangely unsual track listing on the back.

Cover Back: Very modestly aged with minor darkening and faint discolour but any grubbiness or tone traces are few and light. One near the bottom left corner shows little. The lack of ring marks, impressions and creasing is good news and given this has entered it’s 43rd year, I consider this fragile gem very well preserved.

Top Edge: Barely any wear at all, not dead straight, but few edges with card this thin ever will be.

Bottom Edge: Equally as fine and straighter, being the resting edge, this has fared very well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Viewed end-on, this has thickened a little, but much is still quite sharp and importantly, untorn and generally clean. Unfeathered and guaranteed untrimmed, with a thick and quite heavy record stored here, this also has stood up well.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light and mild. All text is perfect and unworn under solid and clear unpeeled laminate which again includes the mono word and number.

Corners: These have also fared very well indeed with little to fault. Any rubbing or creasing light and minor and all retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very fragile cover – one that bends freely so it must always be held in TWO hands, and never just one. Flimsy and light but a classic in it’s own right – as stated, the back track listing is probably unique to the UK version. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and worthy of a plus given it’s fantastic age. No doubting this is the original too with it’s 047 date code. A Decca style polylined inner and as you would expect, very well made. With two near perfect crisp window circles and clear, solid lining, this has only modestly aged with light discolour and the usual glue darkening on the seams that all remain unsplit (or repaired). Barely any creasing and any record impression modest. Just right for it’s vintage and many collectors like them just like this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT++: with any surface marks being ultra fine and near invisible and of course non-sounding – mere very minor friction blemishes only. A superb visual copy that is super clean with lovely shine and intense black. A quality mono pressing from the best manufacturer in the UK, Decca. A copy very lightly played, that for any mono record a highly significant factor. We all know just what state so many of the classics are seen in – many unlistenable and only fit for the skip. This elusive mono record sets the bar very high indeed. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in it’s entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high and sounds as good as it ever can, this was never a high fidelity production but it sounds just right for it’s era. Any surface sounds register little and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that has some quiet and delicate moments. Huge percentage of mono records fail to survive anything like this clean and unused, when they show they are of great beauty and never dismiss them lightly. This will rarely show up much better. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The age of the mono record, these not really designed to be played on revealing stereo equipment, but this one has more than survived and up to the job. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this timeless classic, albeit a very different version – the debut was a gem in it’s on right anyway. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better as a mono original and is strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
