Rarity: Scarce, this a first press mono copy and only pressed in limited numbers. By the end of the 1960s, the mono mode was in major decline and very few new titles were even issued in this mode.

Brief Info: The second Jeff Beck album following ‘Truth’, a moderately successful album peaking at No 39 in the UK album charts. It again features Rod Stewart on vocals and has a heavier blues-rock sound. The young Rod proves he was a great rock vocalist, but friction in the band meant he and Wood left and went on to form The Faces soon after this set. This a very clean record, a much rarer mono first issue that would not have been available long before deletion. The 1969 one EMI box label format also short-lived before the two box version replaced it. So not seen often and this a very fine example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. The back has three rear external flipbacks which is more unusual on unlaminated covers. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, this being the correct mono SX prefix cover as-seen. The sepia promotional inner sleeve is included.

Cover Front: A very wear-prone matt cover that seldom surfaces in better conditions. This one only gently aged with some mild grubbiness on the white areas and slight corner tip rubbing. Any rubbing or creasing minimal and very light and no sticker tears or marks. Overall this uncompromising cover has fared well.

Cover Back: Again some reasonably mild patchy grubbiness on a surface rarely seen with none. So overall not dissimilar to the front. The really good news is the lack of damage to those three vulnerable flipbacks. All three are solid with minimal creasing and all text on them unworn.

Top Edge: Straight with light rubbing, being white, this shows little.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite light thickening only. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends appear lightly nipped in manufacture. Slight discolouration only with the text very close to unworn and nicely centred.

Corners: Any tip rubs and creasing small and light, quite fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile and intolerant late 1960s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better, especially being the rarer mono original. This fine item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an unlined sepia promotional inner sleeve with all edges naturally intact. Still quite with any age toning little, patchy and light near the seam adhesive areas, no hard creasing with only a little crinkle near one corner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little register. Given the mode, this has fared very well overall – those who bought mono records in 1969, still unusually did so to used them mono records players – and most will known what that often meant in terms of wear, damage and degrading which this has avoided. Visually a super 50-year-old mono record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce mono original plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. The sound punchy and warm and few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am sure this record has been played quite lightly and has been reasonably well stored and handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. Always good to hear the young Rod Stewart singing rock. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better in mono and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
